hi all slowly getting there with my defender issues thanks for all the help.
this forum is great
I have a question regarding vacuum pump removal, before I start pulling things to bits, do I have to remove the bracket from the head or can I just remove the air cleaner barrel cheers all

remove the air cleaner barrel and then you will have to undo the small bracket that is under the air cleaner frame, it goes to one of the bolts on the vaccuum pump, make sure you refit it as the air cleaner will vibrate like crazy with out

Dont remove the two head bolts that hold the air cleaner brackeyy....
they be head bolts ;)
