It seems we are blessed with a few,
experts I mean,,
not just people who have 'done one" in their shed but members who "do It" for a living.
I'm just wondering if, firstly THEY would mind having some form of tag thats denotes their expertise, ( as, I've noticed none of them seem overly concerned with STARS  ).
and secondly whether AULRO-ians want that sort of heirachy,,
it would help a lot of youngsters sort the wheat from the chaff,,
but then we might not get any more chaff,,,style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif
any body else got a thought on this???

needs more clarification and definition of what your trying to communicate!
definition of expert; X= unknown quantity and a spert is a drip under pressure style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif

I think we should leave the whole thing alone and just let it happen.
It is apparent that some are here for the technical but not at the exclusion of the social and vice versa.
It is also apparent that some know more technically than others. That is their bent.
As as my Disco ages and my wallet shrinks I appreciate the expertise of others and I am also happy to share my laymans experiences.
If you can't mix business with pleasure then give up business.
The star rating and title is a systemic part of the architecture of the site.
Pesonally I don't give a rats about the stars I'll post when I feel that I have something to say but that is just me.
Lets roll on.
But I do enjoy the fellowship of the Land Rover.

If a member here wishes to add their ocupation or area of expertise to their signiture (which will show on EVERY post) then they are free to do this.
But a lot of people enjoy the web because they dont have to show who they really are unless it is their own choice.
In reading a lot of the postings in here I have come to know who knows what about what.
We have a tyre expert
A Rover engine expert
A jack of all trades who can do what he wants to every part he wants to do it too.
As well as a lot of others who are experts in their own rights and feilds.
Personally I dont consider myself an expert in any feild within these pages, but I do enjoy learning and I have done a lot of that in the very short time I have had my Disco.
Oh but if any of you want a nice Diamond ring or gold chain, I AM the one you want to see, belive it or not

I have to agree, if people want to say what their experteese are, then by all means they can, but I would leave it as voluntary. Aninimity can be usefull if you want to be here to enjoy the site.
For example, if I were a mechanic (which I am not by any means), and I just wanted to enjoy the site, if I put up that I was a mechanic I would be asked mechanical questions all the time, when I am probably coming here to get away from that.
Does that make sense :?:

Hi all, I’m new here and make my bread and butter in part by supplying the 4WD trade so I’m not sure if I should say any thing on this subject but here goes anyway.
I don’t agree with Pedro_The_Swift although one of his points is not a bad idea, the one about the tag so every one knows if you have a field of interest that may by of use to others.
I, for one am not here to build up business as I have a web site for that and I have not posted the web site in my profile for this reason.
I, like many others on this site just want to hear from other like minded Landie owners.
I have worked around Automotive Electrics and Electronics for nearly 30 years and have specialised in Dual Battery Systems for the last 14 years.
So I didn’t come here to get an education on that subject, but I know little about tyres and have been learning a fair bit on that subject from the trials and tribulations of others and that is what I thought this site was about.
There are other subjects that I have come across that have been of interest as well but there are other web sites I visit that have subjects of interest as well and I’m sure others on this site do the same to.
So back the his gripe, I would be interested in a site or forum dedicated to listing people who have specialist fields and are interested helping others with info and no strings ( COSTS ) attached.
Regards
PS Bigbugger I would be interested in your thoughts on this idea.

I have to admit I agree with One_Iota pretty much. But will add I joined to get any advice/ideas/laughs I could, and hopefully give some help. I've been driving, breaking, bending and modifiying landies for 25 years, and while no expert I have rebuilt just about everything on my cars from a series IIA to my current 94 disco but only because I cant aford some one to fix it for me.
P.S. apart from asking what the hell the stars and stuff meant the other day I dont care about them either, I ask or comment for advise which anyone can take or leave as is their right.
cheers all

But to start a whole new forum/thread is going a bit to far I feel.

Gone Fishing!
This article may interest BB and make the rest of us who don't live near the Pilbara envious:
http://www.abc.net.au/science/news/stories...es/s1104964.htm (http://www.abc.net.au/science/news/stories/s1104964.htm)
I guess we are not allowed to fish there but interesting never the less
Back to topic and seriously though.
All we need is some feed back.
They (who ever they may be) do say that man seeks not knowledge but certainty.
Many of the posts reflect this. Some post for the quick solution others wish to fish for answers.
My view is that if we have a problem we present it clearly and when we have done the work and having considered the views presented we have found the "fix" then we post it and close it off.
Then it is "on the record" for posterity and using the search engine it will be found.
Diagnosing a problem in this medium is difficult but worth a go because as we know when you take the mechanic for a drive to demonstrate the problem the symptoms are never apparent.
Let us keep it open and encourage critical thinking: analysis, synthesis and review. This is beyond title. Intelligent discourse even if it is some times speculative is important.

Sometimes there is more than one answer to a question, or a differant way of getting the problem fixed.
So if we locked a thread when we get an answer to a problem then we might never know if there is another way of going about it.

personally i think that if we take all our "tech Q's" into the tech tips and tricks section and TRY and keep it free of all spamming and spurious posts and general crap talk, and keep all that aforementioned traffic in the general chat section , then anyone requiring a tech problem fix can go to the tech section and have a reasonable good chance of not finding any crap in there to sift thru! 8)

Naaa I dont take anyone too seriously.
Just read your comment on closing off a thread and thought you ment locking it.
Just me reading it the wrong way is all.
I like to think this forum is OPEN and informal.
The titles are really only there for fun and mean nothing when you come right down to it.
The only title in here that really means anything at all is the one of "administrator"
but he is a kitten once you get to know him
