G'day Guys,
If anyone is interested I installed a VL Commodore fuel pump (Bosch external) onto my 1987 3.5 EFI RR - did have internal pump.

Top job LRH! 8) It's always good to see practical solutions to an otherwise expensive fix.

Dam! what do they say about great brains think alike!
that is exactly what im doing to the disco on saterday!!!
LRHybrid100 are you using the primer pump that goes inside the
VL tank? i was thinking that I ll need it to get the fuel out of the tank and into the High pressure pump?
what pressure range does the VL reg go to?
cheers discowhite

G'day Discowhite,
I didn't use the primer pump - just the VL bracket and in the end a brand new Bosch pump.
I removed the metal pipework that sits on top of the tank and used 5/16 flexi efi hose to the reversed filter (filter now flows towards the back).
Then a u bend in the flexi pipe into the Bosch fuel pump then finally a bit of an "S" to connect to the standard fuel lines.
The VL pump runs at 3 bar (approx 42 psi) and the RR needs 34-37psi.
The Bosch part number is 0580 464 070 - I paid $175, but have been quoted nearly $300 from Repco!!!
I'm PM you my mobile number if you need to discuss anything.
Hope this helps LRH.

Thanks LRH!
Ashdowns here in brissy sell bosh pumps and they are miles cheaper than
repco ect.
if i get stuck Ill give you a call. 8)
All good landys get modified sooner or later!

Good job and well worth the effort.
I did the conversion some time back, I notice you don't appear to have a primary filter on the suction side of the pump and I can't see the large filter on the discharge side< I assume you have the latter but it's a good idea to put a primary filter in to stop junk getting into the fuel pump.

G'day Richard,
yep saw your pix on Zorbas site ages ago!!!
I did mine slightly different, I put the fuel line from the tank straight to the filter (reversed the filter, so it now runs towards the back of the car) then into the pump and then finally into the fuel lines.
thought it would save another filter - will replace the standard filter more often now also.

Nice Work. Great Minds think alike 8) . I had fuel pump problems driving Perth to Melb and was left stranded in Port Augusta with no where to get a Rangie EFI pump. I got the VL external pump from the local repco store ($200) and fitted it in line without removing the original pump. It sucked fuel through the original pump  and got me out of trouble.
When I got home I pulled the original pump out and found that it still worked. The LPG installer (under vehicle conversion) had crimped and joined 3 pieces of wire to get from the original loom to where the smaller petrol tank was now located :x . Poor electrical connections had meant a significant voltage drop. I decided to rewire the original pump as well as leave the VL external pump in as a back up.

I agree you definatly need a filter pre the pump. These pumps fail real quick if they pick up crap. It is also important that when mounting the external pump that you mount it as low as possible. Injection pumps aren't designed to suck but to blow. If they have to lift fuel too high they starve as the tank getts low. I chased a fuel starve problem on the mates supercharged /injected E type even with 2 pumps it would run out of fuel when tank got low. We ended up haveing to use holly blue pumping in to a swirl tank and then the injection fed from this because we could not mount the pumps lower.
You can also use a VN V8 intank pump. This fitts on to the original Disco unit but the wires are around the other way.

For a pre pump filter you only need the cheap inline filters could be cheaper than replacing the bigger filter more often.

Hi all,
just bought a new fuel miser VN V6 intank fuel pump
for my series1 disco. everything is physcially the same with the
disco unit except for the power supply socket, the VN one
has a plug coupling instead of push on crimp fittings.
positive and negative are around the same way as the disco.
repco told me that this pump runs at 3bar, slightly higher than the orig!
$150 bucks from repco, and on the disco its an easy 1hr job.

I too have the Commodore V6 pump (external) as well as the OE intank pump. I just have a tap on the underside to switch between the two. I actually have had to use the reserve pump just recently as I got a bad batch of fuel on my way to Coral Bay and the intank pump gave up on me. We were at least 150km from any service areas and no phone service and it was about 3am. The second pump saved me.

G'day Discowhite,
I would have done this if it was a Disco - but the RR, well until late ones, did not have the inspection hatch in the floor - so the bloody tank needs to some out everytime / or cut a hole in the floor!!!
So I decided to use the external one.

Cool! looks like the rangie one is the same as the disco one?
didnt know about the inspection hatch.
EVERYTHING CAN BE MODIFIED!

think the late RR and Discos had a flat rear floor and inspections hatch.
My 1987 RR has a rippled floor with no inspection hatch!!!
So the tank needs to come out each time.

Gday all,
Just been out for an afternoon off-road with agro and you wouldn't believe it but my second fuel pump gave up the ghost as well, which is my external commodore pump! UNBELIEVABLE  :x
Anyway thankfully Adam gave me a tow for the 20 or so K's home.
I think maybe whoever installed the pump in the first place has not put a filter between tank and pump, so tomorrow night I will be pulling the pump off and seeing if I can ressurect it.
Other than that it was a fun afternoon and I have put a couple of pics in my album.

G'day Shano,
This is the reason why I reversed my fuel filer and put it inbetween the tank and the pump, as I had a used pump that **** itself after 15 mins without the filter!!!

Gday LRH,
When you say you reversed your filter, do you mean you took the original OE filter (the big one) and moved it so it was in between the pump and the tank?
Shano :?

Hi Shano,
Just get one of the cheap nylon in line filters and put between your tank and pump, see my pics on earlier post

ahoy Richard,
I think I will just go ahead and do that, its just a matter now of getting to the pumps in question to see what actually went wrong. I just wish whoever put the second external pump in in the first place had just put an in-line filter between tank and pump and I probably wouldn't have had any dramas at all.

Yep, you got it.
The original filter still sits in the LR bracket, it just flows towards the back of the car.

VN internal pumps are the same as Volvo 240 and 260 pumps.
New Volvo ones are 1/2 the price.

I used a VN pump in my '86 Rangie. My car had already been fitted with an inspection plate in the rear floor.

Just saw this post. Didn't realise the Rangie pumps were expensive. Mate just put one into an L300. Only used it as it was lying around.
