Has anyone fitted a cruise control other then the Autron. I had an AUtron in the 110 and was very happy with it but have had a bit oif trouble trying to deal with them this time and wondered if anyone had an alternative for a Puma.

Just wandered out to Bess to check my receipts , not much help I'am sorry cause it's an Autron unit. Had it fitted about 12mths ago at BDP in Sydney. No probs with install, fitted just where I wanted it. Works extremely well & even better with Alive remap in place. Less over speed when cresting hills due to lower throttle percentage required for given road speed. All in all I guess I'am happy with it.
Regards Chris.:)

Yep. The over speed cresting hills was my only criticism. I would have happily got another for the 130 but given the laclk of communication thought it was worth seeing if there was an alternative.

VDO would be another option for you.
If you google VDO Cruise control, I guess you'd find a contact in your state.

I installed an AP900 about 12 months ago, PUMA 2.4, never had an issue, went the stalk option and it fitted into the steering switch cradle and into the knockouts in the column cover. cost about $1000

Hi Mark

You installed it yourself? Any issues? They say it has to be calibrated either on road or by one of their "installer network members". Wouldn't think there would be too many of them in Whyalla :D:D

Haven't spoken to them yey but if the on road calibration isn't a nighhtmare I would be happy to fit it myself.

I believe MR Auomotive do a cruise control for the PUMA - I'm not sure what system they use, but you could give them a ring and see if they can point you towards an alternative.

Hi Nugget,

I installed it myself, the longest was to wire in the foot pedal connections, having soldered and heatshrink every connection.
As for the calibration, I didnt have to do anything really apart from take it for a drive, I dont have too much issue with over run unless it is a steep decline.
All I needed was the instructions supplied and a good copy of the wiring diagram, AULRO, and away I went.
the best investment I have ever done with this truck

Mine cost $ 750 fitted and it took the guy around 2 hrs . There are two red wires to choose from coming from the fly by wire and he picked the wrong one first go. After that it all went well. I don't think any cruise control knows it has reached the top of a hill until it over speeds . I had my resume slowed down a bit to save fuel. We have done 6000ks with it so far and love it.:)

AP900 from Mobilecentre in the UK cost 275 pounds with postage. Good back up and support, spent extra ten quid for T harness for the clutch switch was well worth it.:D

I sent them a e-mail & got a reply the next working day, what sort of trouble are u having. Maybe i shouldn't order one if they hard to deal with (no customer Support).

I put up a thread "Ricks Wish List" a Cruise Control is on it.

I have spoken with the Command people and theya re insisteant that the unit must be fitted by one of their certified installers. They were checking who would do it in my area but I am still waiting to hear.

That puts me off straight away. Where will they be if it fails out in the middle of nowhere? I prefer to do all my accessory installations myself so I know exactly how it's done and how to deal with it.
Also, I'd be keen enough to have Cruise Control on the Puma but not if overrun at the crest of hills is an issue. Been there done that with my Nissan GUte and it frustrated the heck out of me:mad:. My wife's Audi has no such issue and I like the CC in that. If there was an aftermarket CC to suit the Puma that worked like the Audi's CC, I'd be a buyer for sure.

We are back in WA although still 400 ks from home and have now done over 10,000 ks with the Autron . I'm very happy with it we have tested it in all types of conditions including low range crawling to high speed touring . The guy fitted it at my home so I could watch where everything was hooked up. I believe there can be insurance issues if it's not installed by a qualified installer ( remember the runaway toyotas). The most the speed picks up at top of hills is 5 kph and it drops again in a hundred meters. No worse than my company Hilux or my Old Disco . In areas with lots of corners and up and down hill like Norseman to Coolgardie I turn it off no cruise works well in these conditions and you need to drive the vehicle yourself. I found on very heavy corrigations it did not work and kept dropping out but again this type of situation requires manual input on the throttle. I drove 1300 ks today across the Nullabor and I don't have a sore right foot.:)

Nah - sounds like you need to drive my wife's Audi. You'd be lucky if it'd overrun by 1kph even on the crest of a steep hill. I'm pretty sure it'll also bring in engine braking and down-change (tip-tronic auto) on a steep downhill to maintain the CC set speed. I use it pretty much every time I drive it. Overrun of +5kph sounds like my old GUte with the K-mart CC fitted at ~$200. I would very, very rarely use it because it was ... I'll be nice ... "frustrating".
Does the Autron have a minimum useable speed? The K-mart one wouldn't go below 40kph, so was limited use for low range.

Defender Mike
24th January 2014, 12:39 AM
No I set it up on the old telegraph track in and out of trees in low range at 20 kph and it worked ok. On the beach at Fraser Island it was great at 50 kph . It will do me although I will take you up on a drive of the Audi. Need to catch up I have heaps of news and found lots of Series 1 bits. How about dinner in a week or so after I get the house and pool back in shape .

I got MR to install mine, works well :) , same problem with overspeed at the top of a hill, but every cruise I have has had the same problem especially if towing. My background in control systems tells me it's something to do with integral windup and if you solved it you would have problems elsewhere.
From memory it was the first one the mechanic had installed in a Defender and it cost about $750 installed.

I see well you won't get one of them cheap. Still across the Nullabor on the way home there were no hills for a long long way and my right foot didn't ache once. Most of the WA highways are flat as well so the old bead type will do me.

Eventually decided on to go with the Command AP900 cruise control. Very happy with the way it works. I opted for the pad on the dash style rather than the stalk as I found that worked well for me with the last cruise and the pad is virtually identical except in colour.

Have not been on a longer drive yet but will give feed back after I head to Toowoomba next week.

Just posting the content of the PM I sent you.
It works OK and the actual cruise control is good.
However IMO the switch interface is a bit clunky compared to say the units that come pre-installed in holden/ford/toyota. Those units have 5 or 6 seperate buttons mounted on the steering wheel. So you get on/off, + speed, - Speed, reset and cancel. The stalk unit only has one button on the end and the whole end also rotates to give you 2 switches ( a total of 3 "Buttons") This means that the functions double up so to speak. My main problem with the unit is that the LED only shows whether the unit is on or off and not if it's engaged in cruise control or on standby. Gets a bit confusing if you are engaging and disabling it a few times in a row as there is no LED feed back, I often end up turning off the cruise when I meant only just to disengage it - not a big thing but then you loose the ability to resume at your previous setting. In my partners Mazda 3 and my previous Camry, the LED comes on yellow when you turn it on and then goes green when its engaged. The Autostrada LED just goes green when you turn it on.

Just the LED thing annoys me enough that it would make me choose a different unit if I were doing it again, but it's not enough to make me replace my unit, as it otherwise functions perfectly.

Having said that I don't know if you have a choice, I'd ask Nugget as he installed a different unit, he may have the same problem.

Cheers Glen

For what its worth, I have booked in to get the Lite-On AP900 with CM-35 stalk installed. Reasons I chose this were that this stalk seems to be the best design IMHO, price (although was not the cheapest, it wasn't the dearest), local support from installer etc.

Good luck.

Just got back from a test drive having installed Autostrada eCruise to my 2.2 130 HCPU this arvo

Works fine, and even performed at speeds of less than 40 kph

Chose to buy it as a kit and DIY. The instructions provided are basic and adequate. Identifying the correct wire at connector 1040 pin 13 (vehicle speed at instrument cluster) has the potential for confusion as there are several Red/Black wires. Use a meter to confirm the correct conductor

Took about 3 hours but most of that was running cables neat and secure. Needed to make 4 solder joints in existing wiring 1 at the connector to the instrument cluster, 2 at the brake switch and one on the clutch master switch.

The ECU fits neatly under the dash- The only criticism on the installation is the connector jumper for the accelerator pedal is a bit untidy. Will probably extend the existing connector guard to hide and protect the extra connectors

Summing up from my earlier research posted, I had the AP-900 cruise unit installed with the CM-30 stalk. Stalk went behind the wiper switch and is easy to reach and use. Only criticism is the over/under speed is a bit too large (6-8kph either way) on only gentle undulations.

Overall I am happy with the unit. And is not too much hassle to cope with the over/under speed.

I've had the Autostrada unit on my MY12 pretty much since it was new. My controls are a stalk mounted behind the wipers on the right hand side of the column which I believe is the only option.
The standard install is a unit with a single colour LED to show if it's on or off.
Probably me but I had trouble with setting it at the correct speed or even telling whether it was engaged or not, I eventually got a two colour LED which shows if it has been set as well, much better.

It works as it should and while I am happy with it and would not put you off buying one , don't expect anything fancy in terms of functionality.
I am sure you are aware of this, but with the defender being a modestly powered diesel, there is no cruise control that will make it perform well in hilly terrain

Cheers Glen
