Headlining

As part of the major refurb the headlining and sunroof shade are being replaced. I started today getting the headlining shell out of the car and completing the sunroof shade. I did not remove the sunroof, just the glass panel, and was able to remove the shade from the top, reupholster then refit.
There are 4 clips holding it in place. Once removed the panel can be bent carefully to extract from the side runners. Refit is just a reversal. Very very happy with the result . The main headlining will have to wait as I will be doing 3 cars at the same time. I recon the cost for each car will be $55.

Peter Jam and I are going to be doing my new car ( in the pics), the kwinana freeway car ( remember that one?) and his Red Classic. Never done one before so should be fun. My other P38 cost $450 4 years ago, I have recently been quoted $700 so looking forward to saving a bundle

I'll be very interested to see how you go. I've never been brave enough to tackle that one; though mine badly needs relining.

When you get to reapplying the new headlining, can you advise on the glue you used and fabric and where you sourced it from. Will need to replace mine in the coming months so starting to look around for material.
Good luck with the job and post up any tips you think are worth while knowing.

Peter, The glue I used for the sunroof shade was Sellys Kwick Grip Spray adheasive from Bunnings. I had a bit left in a can so tried it, it worked well. I have used it before on a Hood Pad which let go when hot so I am not convinced its the best however the hood pad was heavy material and the headlining weighs nothing. The glue must be reasonably high temp. There are loads of general vids on youtube for inspiration and a pretty good P38 write up I came across but cant now find on the web.
Peter Jam and I will be getting a 4ltr trade can of headlining specific glue to use with a spray gun to keep the cost down.
I got the fabric off e-bay, its excellent quality, better than the original and a good price.
There have been questions before about just doing the shade and as I have proved it can be done from the top without removing the headlining. I will also be gluing a piece of silver sun shade to the outer facing side

I did my classic a few years ago, it came up really well.
There is a place in Melbourne (Fawkner) called Daley's http://www.daleys.com.au/ who have a factory full of different coloured headliner material, which is where I got mine from.
They also supply a special 3M headliner spray pack glue if you need it. I think the one I used was 3M adhesive 76. I probably could have used 2 cans to do it, but I got away with one.
It's a bit of an operation, but once you have the fibreglass shell out and cleaned up, you lay the headliner material over the shell and position, (with plenty of overhang all round), lift up the rear section and spray the adhesive onto the shell, it needs a decent coat.
Then you fold the headliner material back over the shell, starting in the middle you smooth it all out. Then work towards the front.
It's a bit tricky when you get to the sun visor mouldings, you have to really press it in there.
Then you trim it all off with a sharp knife, looks like new!

No problem, I was already thinking of that. As long as its reasonably thin I recon it will be a quick and noticeable improvement. I was thinking something like this
