Hi Guys,
I will be out of action on the forums for a bit as I go into hospital tomorrow to have my shoulder operated on.
What they are doing:
repairing torn ligament
removing bursa sack
sub acomial decompression
and rotator cuff repair.
Going to be off work for 2 months... the majority if which will be without pay:mad:
Will be in hospital for 3-5 days, then recovery at home after that.
So at the end of today I will be parking Bessie (the D2) in the shed, and she probably wont be loved for the next month or so.
Ill try to be back to see what I have missed in the forums as soon as I can.
Dont argue too much over the hot topics of the moment
Cheers Everyone
Matt

Take care and follow the recovery instructions. My father had a similar op and decided to ignore them and move stuff around the house and it's taken 12 months to heal properly as he did some damage to the healing muscle.
It's a bugger you can't get paid or a restricted duties job.

Hi Matt,
Two people I know have had this done in 2013. Both were work related injuries. One (under 60) chose to carry on as usual (idiot - lifting furniture, boxes, showing off) so now requires an even bigger operation.
The other (69) is recovering well, doing all the exercises carefully. He also is a Lifesaving instructor and was given really good advice and has very regular hydrotherapy sessions. His medicos attribute most of his rapid recovery - the strengthening of his tendons, muscles, etc to the support of the water when doing various exercises - like trying to push gradually increasing sized balls underwater, etc.

Best of luck Matt, and I agree, just do what the Dr's and Physio's tell you and it will go OK,

Yeah Matt , I had similar thing 2009 following a work injury. I was in the hands of one of qld's finest surgeons. Total time off from accident nearly 18mths.
Ask your surgeon to recommend a physiotherapist for you.....it will make a lot of difference.
Arm in a sling for weeks.....you get a bit stinky in the armpits......washing is task.
You will learn to do lots of things the other arm did.
Good luck with it.
Does this mean you'll have no home brew in april?

Unfortunately this is not a work injury (well I think it is, but cant seem to convince the Army that it was service related at the moment)
Ive put up with the injury for the last 18 odd years, but it has now come to a point where the current rounds of physio, Chiro, Cortizone injections just werent working.... so sort out the surgeon, and tomorrow is the end result.
I certainly will be listening to what the Surgeon tells me to do after the op, as I have been told that if you dont it will make things 10 times worse than what it is now. (My sister is a chiro in the UK, and the earfull I got from her when I told her I was going in for the op, about what to do/not to do.)
Thanks for everyones "good Luck" wishes. When I feel im able to I will report back on how the operation went.
Cheers

If you are not going to get worker's compensation payments, then get a hospital social worker to help you lodge a claim for Sickness Allowance with Centrelink. Do you still have a job to return to? If so, you must have exhausted ALL your leave entitlements to be eligible.

Matt, if your shoulder injury is on your service records, you have a claim. If not, and you can prove the initial damage was caused whilst in the service, find a good advocate. The Vietnam Veterans Association could point you in the right direction, don't be fobbed off by DVA. Bob

Good Luck Matt--
It took me two years for my rotator cuff injury to go away,, and I had to change jobs to fix it(without surgery),, I was told a lot of men at a certain age suffer from it,,

Hi Matt - The RSL in Adelaide (at the Torrens Parade Ground) have a welfare officer that might be able to assist if you think it is service related. Might be worth a phone call for sure.
Watch out for those Physios - they like to hurt you :D (I know from personal experience with the original Mrs Spud!!)
Get better quick.

Hi Bob,
No that injury is not on my records, I know I did it then, but just kept going (not holding the m60 in the proper position against my shoulder when I was 19)
I tried to claim my shoulder when I put in a claim for my knees and lower back.) the only claim that was upheld was my lower back, as it was on my Med Docs!!
MY RSL has a Welfare Officer who is relooking into it for me at the moment.
Cheers

Hi Brian,
Yep I still have a job to go back to :)
And all leave entitlements were used up unfortunately.
Had 3 weeks off crook with influenza B (in August - thanks to my boss who had it and still came to work)
Had 1 week off Sick in November to have my Appendix Out.
And Leave - We have to take 2 weeks forced leave over Christmas, and I had taken 1 week prior, and will have 1 week of Annual Leave only with what i am taking off now.
Cheers

Matt , go to the Vietnam Veterans , they will fight for you. Most RSL welfare officers toe the DVA line. Bob

Matt,
Possibly your surgeon, radiologist or an independent assessor may be able to look at the injury x-rays, ultrasounds or other records and determine how long you have had it from any recorded long-term deterioration.

On reflection, I was unfair in saying what I said about RSL welfare reps. I apologise. Here is the VVAA link, Matt. Take note of their motto, Bob

Hey Everyone,
Just a quick note to let everyone know that im on the road to recovery.
Things werent as bad as what the surgeon expected which is a good thing.
What was done:
1. bursa sack removed
2. calsification removed
3. spurs removed
4. Apparently I had "frozen Shoulder" so he freed that up as well.
The Ligament was not torn, as it showed in the ultrasound, and was only frayed. so that was cleaned up, and apparently will last a few years longer.
Anyhow. Pain not as bad as I expected, and I am doing the exercises the Physio gave me.
Cheers Everyone

sending speedy healing vibes :) if your disco is auto, you can get spinny knobs so you can drive one handed. im permanently disabled now and one handed. other hand i try use my arm when and where i can, and have adapted. (have some shoulder issues now from wear and tear from the strain put on the left side) but craig goodall engineering has spinny knobs :) and can fit one to your vehicle so if you wanted you can drive sooner than you otherwise could :) if i had a spare one id lend it to you for the duration you needed it but i dont at the moment have a spare :(
other than that enjoy the rest :) make the most of it :D you into video games? video games are excellent for injury recovery :D

Thanks Guys.
Will enjoy the rest :)
In regards to video games - Not a fan of the modern video games, but do love the older games of my youth.... galaga, r-type etc.
Went out and checked the Disco this morning, had a look under and no leaks :) so happy with that
Cheers
