View Full Version : Sourcing Replacement Aluminium Poles for Awning

G'day all!
Not technically camping, but I guessed perhaps an appropriate area.
We've had a "Gunyah" awning on the Defender since we bought it. I believe the company no longer exists.
We recently had a couple of the aluminium poles "customised", due to us being lazy and not pegging it down overnight. The wind picked up overnight, and relocated our awning to the roof rack area in a funky new shape.
Does anybody know where to get some replacement poles from? I reckon all the fittings themselves are salvageable, so I just need the poles themselves. They have an inner and an outer, with cam-locks. The outer one is about 22mm O.D., all have about 1mm thick walls, and obviously the inner fits inside the outer.
Has anybody had to purchase anything like this? Is it something you can get from the likes of BCF, Ray's Outdoors, etc.?
Cheers!
Michael.

A quick google search found this...Aluminium tent poles |Tent pole | Tent poles | Tent poles replacement | Tarp poles | Tent Pole Store (http://www.tentpolestore.com/products/adjustable-aluminium-tent-pole-230cm)
I'd try an Iron Man or ARB outlet as their awnings use similar poles.

Pretty much any camping gear selling store will have adjustable poles, maybe even kmart.

At the risk of being called a highjacker, I have the other end problem.
My Tigerz11 batwing awning purchased 12 months ago has finally been fitted and has had its first outing. Like "some" other T gear, the cams are useless - wont lock. I'm currently using miracle tape to hold them open, and the alum tubing isn't strong enough to fit lock bolts.
Do I just throw away the poles and replace them, or does anyone know of any alternatives? I guess I could use radiator hose clamps!

Thanks for the suggestions, all.
I ended up picking up some replacement poles from Outback Adventures, in Morayfield. Great little store.
Spotted that the poles, camlocks and other bits and bobs were a particular brand... "Poles Apart"... very clever, I thought.
They have their own website as well:
http://www.polesapart.com.au
I didn't spot whether or not Outback Adventures had the camlocks for sale by themselves, but I'll check when I'm there next.
One of our camlocks was playing up as well... luckily it was one of the ones that had to be replaced!
Thanks again all!
Now I have a problem with my Dual-Fuel lantern, but that's another thread...
Cheers!
Michael.

I had a 'wind incident' which did bad things to both the spreader poles and the legs of my awning. (The awning ended up over the roof of the truck and the pegs were pulled out and flung a fair distance...) Being aluminium they don't straighten well once creased.
I rang Poles Apart and ordered 4 twist lock tent poles. The short ones are 7'6". The arrived the day after I ordered them and as soon as I opened the box I liked them. They are a fair bit heavier than the originals and the camlock works far better. A couple of (minor) problems that I can live with... The are too long to live permanently in the awning without trimming them down to fit. The are the opposite was around for the awning knuckle. I cut 'collars' from the old bent poles and fixed them on.
All up, for a reasonable price I have replaced the poles with something far stronger than original and Poles Apart stock replacement camlocks and other bits and pieces. Better still the poles are Aussie made in Melbourne, keeping some local metal tradies in a job.
All up positive experience and a quality product.
