View Full Version : PTO winch mounting measurements

G'day All,
Could someone with a Thomas PTO winch (110 Army type) possibly provide the following measurements. I'm trying to work out if I can fit a PTO winch in to a new bull bar design for Defender/County.
I have a mate with a winch, so I can measure bolt mounting patterns and dimensions of the winch itself, but it's not fitted to a vehicle, so what I'm after is the following...........

Basically what I need to know is where the winch is located relative to a standard Defender chassis, sideways, height wise and for & aft as indicated by the arrows in the pictures below. The winch needs to be in the correct position so the drive shaft is also located correctly.

The measurements don't necessarily have to refer to the mounting face indicated if it's easier to measure somewhere else, for example it might be easier to measure to a front face, but this should hopefully explain what I need to know.

Any help appreciated.

Cheers, Murray

Does this help? http://www.winch.com.au/CMS/Uploads/file/W8%20BROCHURE%20REV%201%2021-05-10.pdf

Army Thomas winches use the 291mm drum. I do have one in the garage I can measure but have to dig it out.

Murray,
This is the driveshaft looking back over the front axle, sorry most pics I have are of the gearbox adaptor, & this is minimal info- but you asked for any help:p

hey murray.......just a thought, maybe offer a bar that is has nothing between the chassis rails (i.e. winch mount/cradle) for those with odd winches to maybe make their own cradle.

keen to see a drawing off one and approx. cost

Or, even better again (in my opinion no less!) have the area between the chassis rails removable with common winch mounting locations for high and low mount winches on it, so you can mount your winch on the cradle then mount in in the bar instead of taking the whole bar off to get the winch in. Fingers crossed that makes sense...

I'm fooling you, after I posted I thought about going hack and suggesting it comes with a removable cradle

Great ideas guys.

The design of the bar should make it reasonably easy to leave the middle section clear. I like the idea of a removable winch cradle.
As soon as I catch up on all the other jobs on my list for this week I'll look in to it further.

Thanks to Weeds we have the measurements we need, but as his winch is in a modified bar I'd like to confirm the distance from the rear mounting face of a PTO winch to the centre line of the bumper mounting bolts in the chassis when the winch is fitted to a bar specifically made for the PTO.

If anyone can confirm this I would appreciate it.

On Weed's bar it's 25mm.

Cheers, Murray

Thanks Clive,
Weeds mentioned the drive shaft length might be adjustable, but it's good to see the same measurement to help confirm things.

TJM from the 80s. It's a battered POS.
I,ve thought about doing a custom bar quite a few times - and hVe always concluded that you need two wings joined with the top upper section going over the winch

I have always found other things to do as we'll so have not gotten even as far a do inking an outline drawing. It a lotta work for one bar

If this comes up I may well get one
