View Full Version : TD5 Fuel Economy

Guys, Most TD5 Defender drivers and the magazines are spouting the fuel economy to be around 10litres per 100kms. Mine is returning more like 13-14litres per 100kms. Any ideas as to why? My previous Disco was returning 9-10litres.

Average driving ... town/highway for me returns about 10.5
I don't nurse the beast ... but then again I don't flog it's guts out either.

I'm getting 13/14 ltrs per 100 from my 97 TDI, pre turbo tweaks and fuel pump tweaks. Expect about 12 per 100 post tweaks.

Over the last 10,000km I've averaged 10 l/100km, so I guess that's pretty good for an old 200Tdi. 8) Not any use to Craig though, he want's to know about TD5's. Roso can't be the only TD5ist out there who keeps records can he?

I am getting 11-12l / 100ks but i driving a 130 TD5 which is a little heavier than the 110 and with all the gear in the back tray, in and on, i am little heavier than most. Still very pleased and a lot better than mates who have Landcrusiers. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif

Not as bad as you, around the 11-13. On a big run with a tail wind travelling at 110 best I managed was 11. Changed Air filter, oil change every 5000k did not make any real difference. Am keeping a record at the moment and will have a word with service at the 40,000.

My TD5 auto averages 10l per 100ks. I'm a pretty steady driver though but it doesn't use much more off road.

My Disco over the 2.5 years I have had it has been at best 8.9L/100Km and at worst 12.3L/100Km and I meticulously log ever tank full over distance travelled. Typical city average is 9.8 to 10.2 and highway is 9.5 -10.0. I very rarely rev mine over 3000RPM and I don't get into any traffic light grand prix's. I have learnt that more throttle on the hills only increases fuel consumption for no return in increased speed!
I am aware of Defenders using a bit more fuel and I think it may be due to the less aerodynamic shape of the Defenders.
Make sure your air and fuel filters are clean. These have a big impact on fuel efficinecy. I know a bloke in Casino who runs a TD5 Disco too and he told me that if the fuel cap isn't on tight his runs pretty rough. I have tried this myself but can't emulate the same symptoms. Must have something to do with the fuel return to the tank.

My goodness, but you can be hurtful at times.

There is nothing wrong with the aerodynamics of a brick....
My 130 dual cab, if I can keep my speed to 100k, will do a comfortable 9k/l on the Hwy, and about 7.5-8k/l around town.
(However when towing about 1 1/4 tonne and about 3/4 in the tray at speeds of about 120-130k I tend to only get about 6-7k/l)

My Defender 90 gets about 9-11L per 100K.
The bonus is off road the economy is still fantatsic where my rangie used to be a disaster.

I tend to average 10 lt / 100km in a 98 tdi disco. Best on highway trips and being gentle would be 8.5 lt / 100km. Worst (measured anyway) about 14 / 100 towing an 18ft boat.
When up crawling through the Vic high country, don't bother measuring!!

Sorry, Rosco,
Not trying to be hurtful at all. Believe me, I'd be driving a Defender too(Extreme with the expedition pack) if the Minister for the Opposition didn't have her say on the choice of vehicle. Even though I love my Disco just the same. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif

I had a 97 TDi disco which averaged about 10.5/100 then I got an 01 TD5 disco which was a dog on fuel till I got the fuel pump changed, which improved it a bit also check your tyre pressure. If it's too low this can have an effect on consumption.
