Hi guys,

Has anyone else had this problem with their TD5 when replacing the oil filter?

The problem:

I bought a service kit and the replacement oil filter while having the correct thread and ID numbers is about 15mm too tall to fit into the space it is suppose to live. There is what looks like an oil line running from the bottom of the turbo back to the engine, this line means the taller filter won't fit into position to be screwed on.

Despite my best efforts, $40 in the swear jar AND the best efforts of my kind neighbour (she has much smaller hands than I do) the dam thing refuses to fit.

Is there a something I'm missing, or do i need to be more specific when I order my service kits?

I have attached a photo

The first time I fitted a new screw on filter to my old Series 2 TD 5 Disco I thought I had the wrong part . It took me over an hour and much cursing to get the correct angel for the thread to pick up. I eventually got a stool to stand on and when it all cooled down I finally got it. Every time after that it became much easier. A hand each side lifting while turning with finger tips seemed to work for me .

the 15mm longer than factory one will fit, just.

lots of time an patients and holding every thing Juuust right while you get the threads to start is important.

if you ham fist it and try it on the wrong angle with too much effort you will fold over the leading thread on the filter and then you will never get it on. Spotting this once youve done it is also not as easy as you would hope.

Best of luck.

The slightly larger ones will fit. They are a bugger until you get used too doing them. Basically you need to stand facing the front of the car and use right hand up and under to screw on and is quite uncomfortable. It takes a bit of practice.

Thanks guys!

Looks like I should re-double my efforts.

So it sounds like I almost need to lean right over the bull bar at the front, reach under with my right hand and get it to fit that way?

I think I'm going to need a bigger swear jar!

Being a Britpart filter does it have threads machined in it:p

Easier from the passenger side, however I usually use a milk crate to stand on.

I do them from over the wing, left hand lifts gently and the right hand provides the turning, if that doesnt work I just resort to lots of random fiddling and tongue positions.

Dont swear at it while you do this filter. It will upset the smaller centrifuge filter and that will crack the crown or strip the bolt thread in protest.

Luckily the guy who sold it to me was good about it when I called him about it and said he would look for a smaller one if I couldnt make it fit.

You should try it with a 3" dump pipe:mad:I find mahle filters are a bit shorter and are only a mongrel to fit,not a complete and utter bastard like coopers ect:pOnly poms would put a filter there
