Fuel leak

I have diesel leaking from the bottom of the filter at the rear of the TD5, behind the rear wheel.

I haven't looked at it yet but is there a nut that I need to tighten and how do I get to it. Sorry I'm not much of a mechanic.

It's not a big leak only a few drops and the bottom of the filter is moist.

Any help would be appreciated.

On the Tdi disco there is a drain plug on the bottom rear filter. This is plastic and supposedly should be removed occasionaly to discharge any water that may have accumulated at the bottom of the chamber.

I am told that this plug becomes brittle with age (as we all do) so get a spare and try removing the plug carefully and refitting with a new one. cross threading is a problem.

Best thing you could do if remove the rear wheel and have a good look at it first.

You might have a cracked or split line, or it might be loose as you have said.

If nothing is stand out broken, then check it is all sitting tight, check ALL nuts and bolts, if you have one loose one you will normally find more too.

Well fuel leak is fixed but while I was under the car I noticed oil on the front of the rear diff.

It is leaking oil where the drive shaft enters the diff, but wasn't leaving any drops on the ground so I can only assume it is leaking while moving. Took a litre of oil to fill.

If it wasn't for the fuel leak I probably wouldn't have noticed, although I do look underneath ocassionally. Would have been horrific to lose all the diff oil while driving. I think I'll check underneath more regularly and more thoroughly in future.

It's getting fixed next Tuesday.

What was the cause and fix for the fuel leak?

The diff leak sounds like the pinion seal (I had to do one on my S1.) A litre lost sounds like a lot. 8O

The drain plug was loose on the bottom of the filter.

My guardian angel must be looking after me to give me a simple fuel leak in order to discover a diff oil leak.

Is it a big job to replace the pinion seal? Just like to know what sort of $$ I'm going to be up for

Glad that the fix was a "two bob bit".

The pinion seal replacement on a D1 is theoretically an easy job but in order to remove the pinion a special tool is required and in mine (and others) this can be a difficult job. My shop broke the special tool trying to do it. Nothing that heat and sweat won't conquer. The D2 might be easier.
