Hello All,

A couple of jobs have come up with locations either in Adelaide or Whyalla. It has been decades - more than I care to admit, since I have been to either place. What things are there at Whyalla and how is the economy going there?

Kind Regards
Lionel

I'd be asking Tombie (http://www.aulro.com/afvb/members/tombie.html), he's a Whyalla denizen.

Not much out there but easy access to the desert.

Tombie will be along shortly to extol its virtues, because I didn't find any there on my visits...:D

When I passed through, I thought the place looked interesting.
Well, it looked way more interesting than the places around it.

Not all bad - I've had some fun evenings there - the beer is cold. Actually, I do like the town is built right next to the steel mill, although I'm sure all the residents think differently because of the red dust that covers everything - apparently a lot worse in the old days. I like the water there and that the desert runs right up to it. I also like the huge bit of bitumen that runs out to one of the old mines and no where else, so the cops don't seem to bother about policing it, so you can find out the top speed of the hire car you're driving....:wasntme:

That's where I grew up. Mum and dad still live there and I like to visit. Visiting now is fun because I make the most of what I took for granted when I was younger.

I did choose to leave town though for various reasons mostly due to me finding fun in all the wrong places.

There is plenty of fun to be had and it is still a middle-class town full of footy, soccer, cricket, social clubs and fishing. It's a blue-collar/bogan/tradies town. Oh, centrelink does a good trade.

It can be a hub of adventure;
Coffin bay,
Flinders ranges,
Strezlecki,
Eyre peninsula,
Yorke peninsula,
They are all close and fun to explore/camp/tour.

For the right money I would live there. There are a lot of good people there, but as I proved, teenagers can get bored.

ive been living here for over 20 years, been a good place to me.
its really just a big country town, If you cant entertain yourself here, your not trying hard enough.
the local 4wd club has a bit of a following and have just recently been through Maralinga.
there is a fair following for the classic come vintage car enthusiast.
Ive been involved with the local model railway club and whyalla show for many years.
a fair variety of sports and activities for all ages.

A lot of the bad press has now become history, the red dust issue isn't as bad as everyone thinks, most of it blows in from the north and west of the city, it is desert!
as for speed racing towards the mines, I wont risk the roos and road trains on a very narrow road!

coffin bay, 2.5hrs
port gibbon 1.2hrs
flinders 1hr
googs track 4hs

who wouldn't want to visit a few of them!

and my fleet of landies!

I passed through a few weeks back didn't stop nothing to see here . But down the road I did a job at Tumby Bay great place and fantastic people same for Coffin Bay , Steaky and Smokey and the food in SA cafe's and restaurants is amazing makes the rest of Oz look pretty poor culinary wise. Lots to do around here including swimming with Great Whites eating oysters catching King George whiting and heading up into the Desert. You could do worse .

I love visiting the place. Going back up there in March.

It still retains some of that country town feel, but with most of the amenities of the big cities.

The red dust is a thing of the past. Sure, you can still see it in places, but it is pretty well gone.

As has been said, it is the gateway to the outback. If you like travelling, well, you have a 4 hour headstart to some of the best tracks & best scenery there is.

Like any place, it is what you make of it.

Oh, and there is a great restaurant on the foreshore... ;)

I worked there for three months a while back. Loved it. :D

Plenty to see and do in and around town, and plenty of places to go on weekends etc - I never had the time to see all that was available.

Oh ........ and I love a good feed of fresh Oysters.:banana:

Lionel,

Hello from Brisbane.

How are your thoughts on this challenge progressing?

For me personally there would be two elements to this question, only one of which has really been canvassed here. What is Whyalla like. Not surprising, the people who like Whyalla have responded to affirm their liking of the place. I have been there and I will neither praise nor condemn it - it is OK and there is a lot of prospective discoveries for the newcomer.

The second, but more critical element (again from my perspective) is what has the job there got to offer you and your partner etc? Both now and into the future. Where to from Whyalla or is it a terminal destination? This is the real part of the package for you to tease out.

It's a long way from Bundaberg.....

Cheers,
