Definitely. There's a lot of Japanese investment in China, for example, which would be a good incentive for both countries to stay calm.
China's development and wealth is making it the world's factory and other countries, particularly its near-neighbours, may find that a bit unsettling, especially since its definitely not democratic in any real sense.
Chinese business operators have a long history of being successful in other countries, often causing resentment at their success.
Its only natural that a rich China would want to update its military and technological base, but it's still a long way behind the USA.
The Chinese also resent being patronised, particularly by the USA, and will certainly make it clear they won't put up with that. But the Chinese leadership seems very pragmatic and is unlikely to do anything to damage the overseas markets for products made in China. Making money is their top priority.

Mick, do you think the issue of corruption in the Chinese Gov. could come back to bite them? Bob

And this from the Japanese Prime Minister is a little foreboding

He likens the Japan-China relationship to Britain and Germany before WWI. High trade dependency with military beligerence.

Bob I can see that power and level of corruption as precisely the problem that could lead to a conflict. You have a generational elite in china who can do whatever they like and block, erase or lock up anyone who questions their activities.
People who have poisoned their own kids in the search for a few dollars, (lead paint on toys and toxic bub formula to name a few) are not going to blink at sending their army to die for billions in gas.
Unfortunately the outcome for us would be the end of the mining boom and being the second closest ally to japan ,potential to be attacked.
Although china being shutdown for a period would financially benefit other third world countries as production shifted there.

Bob , Lets hope It is just Saber rattling , as a conflict between these two country's would have major impact for the world in general , and when we look what It would be over a few small Islands ..
