Lucy was rescued by Susan Purves in Queensland. Her farmer owner didn't want her and she was due to be shot. Since she discovered sheep herding she has been a different dog. Sue thinks it's because she realised she had a purpose in life. "Her eyes changed," says Sue. She now lives in Gisborne, Victoria as a companion dog on small acerage

Driver and Daisy. Roughly 200km north-west of Melbourne in Victoria two eight-week-old red heelers bred by Vicki Duncan play in a wheat fields near the tiny country town of Willaura. Heelers are also known as Australian cattle dogs, an Australian breed that spring from imported highland collies. According to the Australian National Kennel Council, in 2012 Australian cattle dogs were Australia's third most popular working dog, after German shepards and border collies.

from National Geographic,
AUSTRALIAN WORKING DOGS breeds were made to be tough, smart and loyal. The kelpie, Australian cattle dog (heeler), koolie and smithfield were all bred here for skills that are useful on cattle and sheep farms. And according to many farmers, these breeds turned out to be harder workers than many men. Other working breeds such as the border collie were perfected in Scotland in the 18th century, but have done well on the arid Australian land.

Andrew Chapman and Melanie Faith Dove have produced these images for their book, Working Dogs. A fellow animal lover, Melanie's photos of Sumatran elephants are on permanent display as part of Melbourne Zoo’s elephant exhibit.

It's good to have a pack of dogs of a variety of ages, as the older ones will teach the younger ones the ropes. These are Anita Martin's kelpies in the back of her truck at Mundubbera, Queensland.[ edit- don't they look happy, except the old fella's on the right]

Tom, a red working dog in Tasmania, was sold in June 2012 for a hefty $12,000. Sheep farmers Paul and Jean Weeding say he was worth every cent and more.

Gibber, a border collie, demonstrates the pressure-and-release technique to tell the bull to submit. This instinctive technique is not intended to harm the cattle but rather to bluff them. Gibber is working on Hat Creek station near Baralaba, Queensland.

Responsibitily is the skill Zap, a kelpie, is practicing. "You need them to be resposible for the livestock when you aren't watching them" says his owner Rob Tuncks of Edenhope, Victoria.

Not every one can be a worker, deep thinkers are needed too. I see she has a mate, Bob

Can you tell me more about the Coolie, mate. We had to have our good dog put down, nearly 15, got crook, just went downhill. great dog, good mate, excellent watch dog. He was an old pig dog, scarred & ugly, he was happy to just go for a run on the beach , had to watch him, he thought little toy dogs didn't deserve to live. Kept him out of trouble, he watched over our kids like a hawk. I'd like to get another dog, not keen on toy dogs, I know working dogs shouldn't be kept in town, normally. Bob

Aww bloody hell Bob, I'm getting all choked up..... I grew up with a Kelpie/Collie cross followed by a Red and Tan followed by a Border Collie. I then (after moving out of home) had a Kelpie /Shepherd cross..... seriously I will always shed a tear when thinking of those dogs, they spent time with our family boating and camping down Jumpinpin way all of our/my young life.

Yes working dogs are more work when you live in suburbia but the rewards are worth it IMO.

Great Pics Bob

Bob,ours is the same colour as a kelpie, but they are lighter built.
She is a working dog, definitely needs heaps of exercise and loves chasing the ball. Not food driven, wonderful companion, very good watchdog, alert and on the ball all the time.
Ours is a bit vocal, will bark a lot, which is the only downside.
She is very smart, easily trained, but also will get out if there is a tiny hole in the fence. They go over or under if they can.
Not an aggresive dog,but will stand up for themselves if needed.Ours is not really interested in other dogs at all.

Can't post up a good pic of her at the moment, but found this one on this site of her play fighting with our springer.

The springer is a working dog as well, works on ducks, rabbits, hares, and any other wildlife on the farm.....:)

If you are on the southside and want to have a look at her, send me a PM.

in the pic they are only playing, they often did this for ages when they were a bit younger, fun to watch.

This is ours, Polly, she would be around 4 now, border collie cross kelpie, quite active, loves the ball, that's her job. Am seriously thinking I need to get her some sheep, or goats to chase though.
We have about an acre down the back that she could chase them around in instead of rounding up the kids and neighbours dogs.
Her only problem is she doesn't jump, we have to lift her in the car etc...
She used to jump but someone took it on their own to 'train' her not to by whacking her in the nose all the time, this really ****ed me off.

If you are looking for a working dog have a look here

Australian Working Dog Rescue (http://www.workingdogrescue.com.au)

Some are retired dogs, surplus dogs, excess dogs and dogs that just don't make the cut.

Next door to our place in a 2 bedroom small unit with no more of 50 square meters of land is a Kelpie dog inside the place for about 10 hours a day :(
The young owner rescue it unaware that was a Kelpie, she was looking for a tiny dog to be with the Springer Spaniel 2 years old bitch. Two dogs in an small unit alone 10 hours a day!! :(
Some people love animals but do not understand the animal needs
