G'day, is that the old 2 cylinder 2 stroke engine? A mate had one in Darwin, towed a small boat, kept the weight to a minimum, took it to all the good barra spots around there, never let him down, Bob

I'm a fan. What a great looking little LJ. A good mate of mine has exactly one of those which is used daily - 800 cc motor and all but in red. His is in fantastic condition mechanically and body wise - you could drive it anywhere.
What sort of nick is yours in 4 x 4? You are a lucky guy.
Memories are kicking in here. I started off in this fourby caper with the 3 cylinder two stroke hard top decades ago.

Bob, you must have been in Darwin when I was there. I sold those Suzukis at Motorama on the Stuart Hwy.
If your trade in drove in we gave you $500 deposit and $1500-$1700 balance depending how hard you tried to drive the bargain.
Then the LJ80 800cc 4stroke came along and spoiled it all.
Lots of stories to tell about the LJ50.

My second 4x4 was an LJ50 until I upgraded to an LJ80 and then an LJ81. Brilliant little four wheels drives. Pity many of the Stations around here and probably elsewhere turn them in to bull chasers. Pardoo probably has 20 Suzuki's of various models in various states of disrepair.
I would love to get my hands on an LJ50 soft top again.

It took a great deal of time for the revs to drop between gear changes on the two strokes and compression braking was not a strong point.

Wonderful little things.
At the time I thought it would be the vehicle of choice for a solo round the world trip.
Come to think of it, I still do.
Below a couple of pics of my LJ50 on a solo circumnav around Lake Eyre in 77.

The Daihatsu was another of the little gems back then :)
I had one. Slightly bigger than the Suzuki with a 960cc 4cyl out of some Daihatsu mini-car. Hopeless on the open road but great in the bush.
Later ones came with a Toyota Corona 2L motor and had a raised bonnet line, then later still it became the Toyota Blizzard.

Yes, I have fond memories of owning one of the first Suzuki 4-WD's sold in Australia... an LJ 20. It had a 359 cc engine (2 cylinders) and could actually go faster than my previous vehicle.... a 1951 Land Rover!
The Suzi cost me just $2,200 brand new around 1973 I think, (bought from Freeman Motors, Main North Road, Adelaide) and was lots of fun.
My brother managed to roll it on a steep hill at one stage, but apart from straightening the canvas top frames, it was unharmed. Fortunately I'd made a bull bar and roll bar for it,so they took all the trauma of the roll-over.
Traded it in after a couple of years on another Suzuki... the LJ 50. Had an extra cylinder and 50% more power!!

That's the UFO! Aron. He's taken me to Mundaring powerlines once or twice (where the photo was taken?) - talk about a weapon offroader. I agree it's the best (engineered) Sierra i've ever seen.
I have a Sierra myself... never to be sold, and never to fall into disrepair - it's too much fun. Just like the LJs they're starting to slip in numbers - I don't think i've seen an LJ on the open road for years, just one or two unloved paddock bashers. In good order they have one of the best exhaust sounds i've ever heard.

I still have one, the absolute and complete opposite to my 130. It allowed me to set up the 130 for touring type duties and prevented me damaging it in tracks where a 130 struggles to fit.
Mine is twin locked and has 7.50/16s with a low first ratio of 121:1. It's great in tight gullies and fantastic for making bogans in big patrols and cruisers on 35s shut up and take notice.

LJ50s certainly seem to affect people. At school I recall going for an engine run in thrash in one that was owned by my brothers friend - he now owns 2 ARB outlets in Sydney and competes. My best buddy also had an LJ50 at school, great times with so many laughs and adventures and that's what spawned my interest in 4wds! Wow, that thing copped a flogging and spent most time on 3 wheels until the day it landed on no wheels.
Never noticed the centered front diff.

Both diffs are centred, at least spare axle fits both sides.

My last 4x4 was a zook, but a little later model than the ones shown here.
1999 Jimny. Recently sold it as its too small for two up and the dogs... And it allowed me to buy a new moto :p haha.
Put a 2inch OME lift, ARB bar, IPF lights, 215/75r15 muddies, uhf, home made draws, breathers etc etc etc.
Amazingly capable, kept up with my mates big rigs (all on 32"+ tyres, and various mods) which they hated as they gave me heaps for buying my little hairdressers car (stocker originally)

Never heard of auszookers.
Is it centered on older Suzis and/or modded hard core Suzis or is it a broad spectrum site? The reason I ask is that I have a 2013 Grand Vitara Urban and a 2013 Grand Vitara Sport and have been looking for an Aussie Suzi web site to join.

Awesome little jigger well done mate!!! My first memory of the little Suzuki's was watching Alby mangels as kid and thinking what a wicked little truck as a kid it was right up there with the A-team van LOL. The only bad word i have ever heard spoken about them was they had the power of a blender. One trip at Land cruiser park i saw a little jigger do some amazing things and go places my disco really struggled with while this little suzy did it easy it made a lot of trucks look pretty ordinary that day.

Yep,great little vehicles.
I bought the second LJ80 sold in Australia,it was a dark brown hardtop.I would have been the first, but the dealer decided that he would register one for himself first, which was a light blue trayback.
Was also one of the very early members of the Suzuki owner club here in Sydney.
In all the years as an owner and member of the club, the only place I ever saw an LJ roll over was on the road, usually going around a bend on the way to a trip.Or the guys deliberately driving sideways across the face of the biggest sand dune they could find at either Kurnell or Stockton and then stopping and letting the vehicle roll over all the way to the botom(softtops with the screen folded down) and then just starting them up and driving away.Gotta love 2 strokes.

They are pretty much a collectors item now.
Best attended club trips I have seen were with the Suzuki club.It wasn't unusual to see 20-30 cars just on a driver training trip. And it was quite a sight to see a line of 20 or more LJs lined up on the side of the road, waiting to set of on a trip somewhere. The 70's were a prime time for real 4wders in Sydney, great tracks and only people that were 4wd enthusiasts,as there were no creature comforts in the available vehicles.

I remember driving an original 2 stroke LJ way back in the 1970's.
I borrowed it from The Albury Ford dealer and drove it around the block.
It had absolutely NO discernible acceleration AFAIR.
I recall thinking it must be only running on 2 out of 3 , but the sound was the same, like some slightly angry bees. It took about 1 kilometer to get to 60Kmh.
I left it thinking that those things are just dangerous.
I owned a Vitara for a while and IMHO they were underrated. Mine was a carby one and they would flood when going up really steep hills. Made life interesting.

We had an LJ50 hardtop back in the late 70's early 80's and it was a fantastic little machine. The little jigger had over 100 thousand kilometres on the clock when we sold it and it was still going strong. The secret to long engine life with them was to keep clean oil in the tank. The failure of so many, was people topping up the oil tank in dirty conditions and getting crud in the oil tank. Next thing you know there is a blockage with the oil feed and the motor is cactus. I used to pull the tank off and wash it out about every twelve months to remove any grime that may have settled in the bottom of it. The hardtops had a higher ratio transfer case then the softops!
Only recently I sold an LJ20 motor, two cylinder 360 cc, as it had been replaced with 1300 Corolla motor and gearbox(back in the day). I still have the gearbox here if anyone is interested. The LJ20's were great in the paddock, but very slow on the road, as they had a top speed of not much more than 60kph.
Cheers, Mick.

4X4,
The rust is in perfect condition, it's the rest of the body that is not too good.:) My restoration skills will be tested.
I had a good look at the other eight today, not all are LJ50's but a couple of LJ80's as well. A couple would be rebuildable with complete fibreglass bodies. One LJ50V II and one LJ51 (I think) It is still covered in crap, but it has a tray.
I will get two more, one for parts and another that has a complete aluminium front end - not an amateur job either. The one with the 12a is beyond repair - body paper thin and engine seized.

Bushrover They did't make a LJ51..
And a LJ50V 11 is a LJ80 hardtop with LJ50 running gear..:) Extremely rare in Australia..
Awesome:) LJ20's are worth quite a bit these days..very very rare in Australia.
My competition Suzuki LJ is going to run a LJ81 chassis and body with a early sierra 1 litre motor, with 2 stroke gearing..LJ50 diffs and LJ50 softop transfer:p

Bushrover They did't make a LJ51.. LJ51 tray back. It is definitely a tray back, has LJ80 style rear shock mounts and large fuel tank and the owner is saying two stroke. I have to help him dig it out after Christmas
And a LJ50V 11 is a LJ80 hardtop with LJ50 running gear..:) Extremely rare in Australia.. Yes the very last of the two strokes around 1977-78. Once it is out from under all the junk, it may be an LJ50 with LJ80 bonnet, guards & front panel. I am being optimistic and hoping I have found something rare with both of these. He has some pretty incredible stuff.

I have to get a few photo's. The old guy is a bit sensitive about advertising what he actually has. With all of the junk piled on everything no-one could steal anything and to get anything out of his shed would require the roof to be removed and a crane.

Here's my Suzuki Maruti.
It's built in India, 1000cc engine once owned by QLD GEO.
Sold it to finance my Formula Vee. My D2 went just about every where the Zook did and was cheaper to run with more comfort. That's also where Zute comes from, Zook Ute.
I've got a '86 Blue LWB Sierra with a white canopy in the shed, waiting to be restored..... Hopefully when the kids get older they might get interested in helping.....

My parents bought a 1.3 narrow track LWB new back in '84 and put one of those popemobile canopies on it. They were hopeless (the canopy not the car). The car would move as the chassis flexed and being 1 piece the canopy would not. Flogged out the holes in the windscreen frame where it attached.
I still love my Lj It out performs the 130 (in offroad conditions only of course, though it is registered) in all conditions except deep water, but has virtually no other uses other than offroading for fun. I built it years ago and have been tempted to sell it to build a series/rangie hybrid but it's just so much fun.

I loved my lwb Suzuki :) but unfortunately rust eventually got the better of it . I put a 2 litre injection motor in it and it was quite a formidable machine off road. It was pretty rapid on road too :D I'd certainly buy another if I could find one at the right price
Here's a couple of pics at the "Billing Land Rover" event.
