View Full Version : Leather Steering Wheel 4 Puma

Hi guys I'm looking at buying this from landrover tuning. http://www.landrovertuning.com.au/defender/interior/sport-steering-wheel-black-genuine-leather-include-adapter-steering-wheel-cover-with-land-rover-logo-for-defender.html
I was wondering if anyone has one and if they are worth the money, at over $900 for a steering wheel :eek::eek:
there is the cheaper leather Raid for just over $300 but then you have to get the Boss Kit, and if you want the solid colour for the middle your up around the $560 mark anyways. And the $900 one looks like its OME a bit better quality, the Raid looks like a Supercheap Auto job.
The most important question is what size??? I'm thinking 360mm if I'm not wrong the standard Puma wheel is over 400mm, I want to go smaller but too much.
Can anyone confirm that a 340mm might be a bit too small or not????
Cheers, I look forward to your opinions. :D:D:D

A lot of people use aftermarket wheels in their fourbys (various makes, not just Landys) and 350 mm is generally regarded as a good size.
You can get other aftermarket wheels that are leather (eg Momo does a few models that would suit, and some models come in both 350 mm and 400 mm). These look good (but not as flash as the one you're looking at) and are a lot more cost effective.
I am considering a Momo "tuner" for mine, which is full leather rim and available with black spokes. I am waiting for the vehicle to be delivered (late March/early April) so I can count the splines to ensure I get the right boss kit.
My wife and I will be visiting the UK mid-year, so I am thinking about sourcing a wheel and boss from over there.
Good luck with your search. If you have the clams, I reckon that wheel you're looking at would be awesome :)

Babs, the steering wheel you are showing there is from Startech in Germany. www.startech.de (http://www.startech.de) Startech are a tuner owned by Brabus I believe, which is again Mercedes connected. All what they do is extremely high quality, no compromises there. Startech are used by Land Rover for producing starting from factory Defenders several not very large limited editions for primarily the German and Swiss market. This steering wheel was for the first time put on the Defender German and Swiss "Black Pearl" limited editions, which in total must have amounted to approximately 50 piece.... More recently this same steering wheel was again used in the German "Blaser" and Swiss "Hunter" limited editions, again small number only.
I have bought this steering wheel directly from Startech about 4 years ago for my SVX. In my opinion it is the nicest smaller diameter wheel you can get for a high spec Defender. If you order it, it indeed comes complete with Land Rover black logo, as well as with the boss. In order to be sure you get the right boss for your vehicle, better to take your current steering wheel off first and count the splines. Still today some Defenders have 36 spline column, others 48 spline.
Also when you order the steering wheel do not forget to specify which color stitching for the leather you want. Believe if you do not ask, standard it will be black leather with white stitching, but for my SVX I ordered all black stitching. This wheel makes the Defender much more comfortable to drive, but I would suggest the price being very high, it is mostly suitable for a high spec truck. Otherwise maybe go for a similar diameter cheaper different brand....
If you go on defender2.net, look for my gallery (same user name as here), and you will find many pictures of my Startech steering wheel.
Below is already a picture of this wheel from the Startech website, Eric

FWIW dedicated off road race steering wheels for Dakar type comp use from Momo, OMP, etc. are 380mm, while most 'sports' type wheels are 350mm diameter.
Just bear in mind that a smaller wheel may obscure the instruments too, and smaller isn't always better, rim size and shape have a huge bearing on feel too, and I've used wheels as small as 10" Momo's in race cars. (I miss the suede D shaped wheel I had in one :D)

By the sounds of it a 360mm would be sufficient.
I did not want to go too small.

I like that wheel, I was looking at getting a replacement one a while back but when I checked the ADR it seemed to hard, i.e. the replacement steering wheel has to comply with ADR10 and the wheel has to have a padded front, I took it that it meant it still had to have that big rubber cushion on the front, but looking at the pictures above, I would say that is padded, would anyone have any input on that? Would that be classed as padded enough?
cheers

Thanks guys for those links, heaps better photos. I'm assuming that wheel is a 360mm and it looks like it's still over the top of the dash. I want to be able to have clear vision of the front of the bonnet without the top of the steering wheel being in the way like it is with the standard wheel.
Does anyone have one fitted that can tell me where the 360mm sits with regards to the top of the dash.
This is what I hate about shopping online, here is a good example where going into a store and physically siting one would end all concern for sizing.
Anyways, if anyone could help where they sit, it would be appreciated. Cheers :)

OK: I wanted to be in a position to quote from direct experience before replying. My Nakatanenga/Raid wheel has just arrived today.
I have fitted the wheel as per the photo linked here, lifted from one of the threads quoted above:
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a85/leedslandrover/Nakatanenga/94f5f3cf-509e-4fa0-a497-6ffb6c34c49d_zps957d6771.jpg
...except that my "horn" button is black/silver, and the stitching is black. The quality of the wheel seems quite good, it's a delight to use and it clears the instruments perfectly. It's 360mm, which seems to me an ideal size (at only 10mm difference I'd imagine a 350mm Momo is more or less the same, but can't guarantee it, as I have no direct experience). Also, the curve of the top "spokes" of the Raid wheel means the instruments are well in view, whereas I note some of the Momo wheels can have straight top spokes - will this also provide the same clear view? (Open question - would welcome a POV from someone with a Momo).
I bought mine direct from Nakatanenga - note that their web prices include 19% German VAT, which they may drop (if you so request via a direct email discussion). It ended up being quite a reasonable deal, very happy so far.

FWIW I have a 15" (380mm) Moto Lita in my 110. It is great. It is a tad smaller than standard and also a little closer. The smaller diameter isn't enough to change the feel but it gives me more leg room and makes getting in and out much easier (I'm 6 foot 1) with Scheel-mann seats.
The Moto Lita also has the Landrover logo on the boss. The quality is very good, but it does have a slightly english feel to it.

Thanks Skidrov, that looks really good on.
Does the top of the wheel still sit over the dash like the OME. I hope not, I'm trying to find out if I have to go smaller than 360mm or not. I want a clear view of the nose of my bonnet, which I don't have with the OME.
Skidrov could I trouble you for a pick from a seating position with a view over the dash?
Cheers :)

I went through this whole saga last year and I found the Aussie made SAAS Star leather wheel (350mm) was to my liking, I also looked at the offerings from landrovertuning, momo etc.
I fitted it to a Momo boss, part no. HUB K5613.
The horn button with the Landrover logo I purchased from a member on defender2.net who had them made in metal.
As you can see none of the gauges are obscured and the wheel rim moved closer to me by 12mm. Overal it is much nicer to drive with I think plus you get the benefit of not banging your legs when getting in.
Plus, all up under $300.

Cracka,
Thanks for that post!
Momo boss, part no. HUB K5613 - Is that for 48 or 36 spline?
Who from Defender 2 made the centre logo?
Have you hooked up the horn up to it?
Thinking of doing the same......

No worries Tomo.
When I did it all I spoke to Paul Roman (Roman Autotek) who are the importers for all things Momo, I think they started in the 80's from memory. You can order from them over the phone as their website doesn't list the boss. Their Ph. 03-93304443.
That is the 48 spline. The box has description HUB K5613, the receipt has HUB 5613 D, but if you order it from them (the safest way I found) he will know exactly as he was going to update his records after I fitted mine. You will need to grind a few mm off the rim of the shroud which sits under the boss for clearance, if you've taken your wheel off you will know what I mean, its an easy job.
Also with this boss the indicator cancelling does work, apparently some bosses it does not.
The horn button I got from 'Killer' (Chris) send him a PM if your'e a member or this is his website CSK Landrovers (http://www.csklandrovers.co.uk)
Edit. I just checked his website he still sells them, 15 pounds.
No I didn't hook up the button I don't think you can, I find it just as easy to use the fitted horn on the stalk. I actually used a bit of silicone on it and glued it to the back of the dress ring as the SAAS wheel dress ring hole is slightly smaller than a Momo.

OK, hopefully what you're after is attached. One photo shows the instrument view, and with the other I tried to show/simulate the "drivers view". I think it gives the clear bonnet nose view you're after, with me in my car. Obviously, can't be sure the same would be true for you (i.e. we might have different heights & driving positions).

Mine came off by some simple but determined rocking of the wheel (along the axis of the column, up-and-down on the opposite sides), with hands in the 9 and 3 o'clock positions. I'm advised the wheel can come off suddenly, so it's a good idea to keep the nut on a turn or so, to avoid having "Land Rover" written backwards on your forehead. :)
However, guessing you've tried that? :(

You could buy or borrow a steering wheel puller.
Or as I have done with my vehicles over the past 34 years of car ownership the following.
Just undo the nut enough so its loose and the steering shaft is still sticking slightly above it. Then hit it with a hammer, you don't need to belt it but make sure you hit it square so you don't burr over the edge of the shaft, repeat as necessary and it will come off.
Preferably have someone putting upward pressure on the wheel at the same time, if you haven't a helper knees at the bottom and your free hand at the top :D

G'day Babs, your Q's answered .....
I bought mine from here SAAS Star Wheel - Auto Parts & Tools Shop (http://www.autopartshop.com.au/saas-star-wheel.html) you can also get it in titanium spokes as you will see. This mob were the cheapest $120 with $15 delivery when I bought.
The Momo boss get it direct from Roman Autotek Melbourne, order by phone 03-93304443 that was the best way when I did it as their website doesn't list the boss kits. They were extremely good to deal with. The boss was $109.09 plus $9.09 delivery. See my other post above for the part No.
No, SAAS don't do a boss for the Defender, not many manufacturers do.
Yes it is real leather.
The Landrover centre has to come from the U.K, here CSK Landrovers (http://csklandrovers.co.uk) 15 pounds plus delivery, I can't remember exactly but at the time it was about $30 delivered but it certainly brings it all together.
I did quite a bit of research on wheels/bosses before I bought and a lot of comments were that some brought the wheel closer to the driver than the standard wheel and made it a bit uncomfortable in the drivers seat, but as my photo shows this wheel/boss combination only brought it forward 12mm, which I find is a very nice position together with the smaller size.
I just thought, not telling you what to do, but don't forget to count your splines before you order the boss, the part No I posted is for the 48 spline.

This certainly isn't leather, but I thought you might be interested in seeing something I spotted this past week while wandering the back streets of Tokyo, of all places. This Defender was pretty well tricked out, as I'm sure you could imagine, but the thing that really caught my eye was this mod care of Moto-Lita. I love it!73580

I thought I better update progress
I purchased Momo HUB K5613 from Roman Autotek, however it seems to be 36 splines and would not fit?
