Just a general question,,
Do computers change with models?
does their ability to manage power output change?

all Austrailian disco's s1 use pretty much the same ecu. The 3.5 is a different part number however. The fuel map is a compromise for sure, LR have to come up with a map the works for many variables which may mean it is not totally suited to South easr QLD. The 14 cux injection system dates back to 89 so is pretty old tech really. This is good in one way cause it makes them easy to fix/fault find. The system is capable of running closed loop using labda sensors in the exhaust, but this was mainly to make them run leaner for the US not to give them more power. They also don't control the ignition advance. More modern systems run closed loop with the inclusion of a knock sensor as well ie the ecu knows when the engine is starts to ping and adjusts the timeing to stop it. This is one ot the reasons new cars often benifit from quality fuels with high octane because if the on set of pinging is high the ecu will leave more timing in. In general terms more timing generally will give better fuel economy and quicker accelleration.
If want to up grade you be better off looking after-market like an "EMS stringer" or similar.

Thanks shaunp,,
apart from the seemingly far too common "V8 IDLE STUTTER",
BUB91 is fine,, style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif
just curious if the computers changed much from '88 to 2004.

Yes Series 2 Discos use a different injection system but Australian Ser1 cars use 14cux and should be pretty much the same. 3.5 l and 3.9 look the same but run a differnt map. I have a spare 3.5 one I think.

Does my 95 Tdi have a 'puter?
I have a throttle cable...no fly by wire.
I haven't had to reboot it yet!

For curiosity, can you clarify what you mean by "V8 Stutter" 8O ??
Thanks
