Hi all

Kind regards

Ahh bugger, I'm not familiar with the diesels, is the pump completely shot? Could it be a gasket or a hose?

I think it was a gasket as the leak appears to have stopped after the radiator stop leak treatment but still a rattle sound from the pump even tho it appears to still be working. That sound could be water dripping on the serpentine belt as well however.

With the engine running, I doubt water dripping onto a belt would be audible.
If you think the pump would last the rest of the trip you could either:
a. Take a gamble on the stop leak, personally I'd prefer a real fix, but that may be unrealistic in this situation
b: find someone that's open that you could get a replacement gasket from (probably unlikely, being a weekend)
Or,
c: pop into a supercheap, repco or whatever's open, grab a tube of gasket goop, caulking gun and any spanners or sockets you may need (repco usually has a $10 or less tool clearance box), and do a carpark repair. Remove serpentine belt, remove water pump, make a temp gasket with the goop, and reinstall.
Personally I'd go for option c instead of relying on stop leak and have done almost exactly that to fix up Jeremy while I was out shopping with the mrs

I dont know how to remove the belt or pump. The leak has stopped and no rattling noise. It was more like a screeching noice when water would go on the belt. Would water leak from the head gasket externally? I cant get my eye 100% on where the water is actually coming from. All I can see is it running down the side of the block from behind where the pulleys and pump is.

it will be the P gasket, the pump gasket or the pump seal.
if it was getting on the belt thats most likely the pump seal.
to remove it
drain the cooling system
crack the 3x 10mm head bolts that hold the pump pully on
use a long 15mm spanner on the tensioner and lift that, (the tensioner is mounted on an arm at the top of the motor under the top radiator hose, use the nut on the pully itself not the one on the arm that mounts under the U pipe on the thermostat housing)
remove the belt (take a photo first)
undo the 10mm head bolts that hold the pump on noting their location and order
pry the pump free being careful not to dislodge the P gasket
clean the surfaces.
assembly is the reverse the bolts get tightened to 25nm and should have loctite 243/242 on the threads and a slick of anti sieze on the shank of any that have one. depending on the gasket supplied with the water pump you may need to use an additional sealant, I use hylomar #3 (or equivelant)
if its the pgasket
disconnect the batteries
disconect the alternator wiring
remove the alternator
remove the water pump
remove the bolts from the mounting frame (dont forget the extra bolts at the bottom, one of them needs 13mm from memroy)
remove the pgasket and clean all of the mounting surfaces.
installation is the reverse of above with the same torques on the bolts and loctites as per the water pump.
I habitually replace the P gasket any time I have to disturb the waterpump.
if you keep the power levels down you can decrease the leakage rate by running with the cooling system cap on loosely so that it wont pressurise but you must keep an eye on the coolant level, failure to do so typically results in melty heads.

Awesome advice thank you guys! Thankfully the stop leak has fixed the problem for now I'll drive home to sydney and get all the gaskets done or do them myself.

Hi Tank.
Mate that is super generous of you. I did manage to get home thankfully and got the pump changed today. Thank you for the offer though it is nice to know genuine people abound on this forum and in the world still.
Kind Regards
