View Full Version : What skinny as a second bonnet mount spare

I think the answer is no but thought I'd get confirmation so I can just move on.....
I would like to mount a spare on the bonnet of a Td5 130. This would be a second spare, and will quite possibly never be used .... but you never know. I have dual wheel carriers on the rear, but have too much weight over the rear axle and would prefer to move a spare to the front.
I was wondering if there were any tyre sizes 'skinnier' than my 235/85R16 which could be fitted to a 5.5" rim which would have the same circumference?
The objective being to reduce the impact on driver vision of the bonnet mount.

A standard 750/16 is the same circumference as a 235/85R16 (31").
750/16's are a very common size fitted to earlier Defenders, Countys and all (?) 130's as standard, so they're easy to find second hand.

Thanks Murray - I already have a few 750R16s kicking around but was hoping for something even skinnier.
What difference in circumference becomes materially important ... the exploroz tyre size calculator has the 235/85R16 having a circumference 6cm greater than the 750r16

Not sure how tall you are, but perhaps you could combine a 750/16 tyre with something like these MUD Seat Rails (http://www.mudstuff.co.uk/mud-seat-rails.html) just to raise your seat height a bit.

The chances of finding something skinnier than a 750x16 might be slim.
A 238/85R16 has a height that is 85% of the width. A 750x16 is 100% isn't it?
Are there any common tyres that are more than 100% profile?

I don't know of any, let along common ones, but how about a larger diameter rim with a narrower tyre? Not going to be something common though - all the 17,18,19,20" tyres used today are wider than 7.50 as far as I know. Maybe something industrial or agricultural?

If your a short-arse like me, maybe you can raise the seats?

out of the 200 000km I have travelled with a 235/85/16 on the bonnet I reckon its been an issue for 100m max. i.e. the odd hole/drop off/tight spot

do not know your engine, but could you make a sort of well in bonnet to recess that tire down lower to the motor, hence make it lower. Feasability of this may depend on how high motor is.
However something high in center of motor like carbys in older Land Rovers could possibly fit in where brake hubs normally go. If this is feasible you would have to learn to TIG weld aluminium to do it [or pay someone], but I do not know without looking at the set up.

do you carry other heavy stuff on rear. Seen High lift jacks on Bullbars,
And I saw a terrific little, very low roof rack attached to a Range Rover Classic bonnet. He used this to carry his collected firewood when camping. He is on this forum, but I have yet to see him post [not that I get time to read most threads], and he might not want me to mention his user name so I wont post his user name. But perhaps something heavy from the back other than a tire, something low like a gas stove could also be carried this way-- but do not ask me if it will be legal. He may only use this bonnet mounted roof rack off road when camping.
By the way I used the term roof rack to describe it though it possibly should not be called "ROOF RACK" as it is mounted on the bonnet.

do not know your engine Td5
I understand there is no room for a well in bonnet given the height of the Td5- and I'm not handy enough to do anything like that myself anyway.
There is no other item that comes close to the density or overall mass of the spare that I could shift forward instead.
Thanks to all for the replies - I'll just stick with the 235/85R16 or the 750R16.

Forgot, but our Northern Rivers RFS has a couple of Defender traybacks with the spare tire mounted on the Bullbar. That may be an alternative for you. Saw a Toyota with one on Bullbar which reminded me.

In Tweed heads Tender Center this weekend is one of those very narrow spares that are slim to take little room. Sorry I did not take note of its size or what rim. It had on it not for road use, that is it is just to get you to a garage. They do post things on the net, and if it may be suitable may post it to you. I was looking for 225/70/R16, and glanced at it while passing. It looks New, but would not really be for offroad, but thought I would mention it.

wheel dia is important. or you may cook your transfer case.

bonnett is reinforced for the mount.

get a S!!! mount and locking hook things, do not forget the 4 rubber blocks that the wheel actualy sits on

i use a Dunlop road gripper, 7.5 X 16 which gives me 33" dia, its a light truck wheel
