I'm going to fit a double din gps/stereo to my 2005 D3 S model.
I've done heaps of research and have decided on the bits needed and am ready to go.
The only thing I'm not sure of is how to actually secure the unit in the dash.
I know I will need a new double din facia, but do I need a double din cage as well or do I mount the stereo unit to the new facia with the bits that come with the unit.
Do you have to make something to secure the back of the unit as per the original radio that has a couple of bolts which slot into a cavity on the sides.

Do a search you can find double din facia adaptors and wiring adaptors on the web. Comes with the plastic front to match.
eg:

Interested in what make and model of GPS and stereo have you chosen?

That's my question. Do I need the cage? Or do I use the brackets shown in those kits to connect the unit to the new front panel.
Non of the posts I've read, actually say how the unit is installed into the dash.
I'd like to make sure it is fitted solidly. I intend to do some 'proper' Land Rover driving.
The unit I'm considering is here.

I take it that the seller is US based - is the radio section compatible with our radio bands and frequencies etc?

Very unlikely it will be. :(
Also what about map updates.

i had a double din radio installed some time ago. It required a fascia kit, which came with a cage.
Cheers

According to the specs it has the same frequency range as Australia uses.
I'll put IGO on it and just buy a new small GPS if/when I need map updates.
It seems that I might need the cage then. That's fine I'll get on of them as well.

I had a non gps Alpine head unit fitted
IVE-W535ABT. The installer also speced an install kit that allowed plug and play connection of landrover stereo harness/antenna and the ISO standard used by Alpine.
So kit came complete with harness adapter and facia kit to make it appear to be OEM.
for GPS, I use a 7" nexus tablet, which gave me additional flexibility.
you can get the fitting kits from ebay UK seller..or pay the stratospheric prices we get here.
Oh BTW..you will loose the car clock on the dash.

I bought an eonon unit for my 325 bmw (model with the fascia shaped to fit) I picked it up on ebay (new) from Hong Kong for about $350 inc shipping. Okay unit but the radio reception is poor - I live 12 Kim's from the Brisbane CBD & the radio crackles all the time. There is no separate microphone for the Microphone it only has a built in microphone so half the calls I make the other end cannot hear me :( -- I have let them know and they said send it back we'll replace it so now I'll have a hole in the dash for probably 2-3 weeks while it makes the round trip.
Install is smile and it came with all the adapters etc to plug & plug in the bimmer. Supplied gps was terrible so upgraded to igo (pm me for link) and it works well now. iPod good, Bluetooth streaming good, DVD / cd good. Haven't set up the reversing camera yet but also has another video in so you can have a second camera. Probably shouldn't complain for what I paid :)

Old post but wondering how yours is going. Button breaking after 11 years on my 2005 D3SE prompted me to take a look.
