View Full Version : Accelerator pedal travel....bit of a silly one :)

Hi All!!!
I have noticed that on my 300tdi accelerator pedal travel (idle to max depression distance) is much bigger, almost double than on my ex landcruiser for example, and all other cars that I've driven, so when I go to "pedal to the metal" it, I have to move my heel on the floor or extend my foot in some un-natural way.
Is this standard for them? And is there a cure how to bring that range to "normal" travel distances? I taught about drilling another hole on the pump arm where cable attaches, but I'm worried that it will become too hard then.
Worse case, I'll just get used to it and then rev the s*it out of my wife's rav4 when I drive it :D
Thanx all!!!

compared to other vehicles its got a fairly long travel on it.
Theres a reason for this, dont mess with it.
Quite simply.
the pedal has a longer travel beacause in low range you need to be able to finesse the pedal to drive properly and sensibly.
other makes basically rely on "full speed ahead and Damn the torpedoes, ground terrain, driveline, tyres, common sense, safety and everything else that doesnt look really cool and noisey on youtube"
if you have excessive travel before the engine begins to respond thats cause by cable stretch or the adjuster nut working back, its a plastic thing that holds the cable some fit well and done move others spin off faster than a politician caught in a lie.
I usually adjust i then thread a ziptie through it and the bracket to hold it in place ala tie-wiring theory.

Interesting thing with nut slipping, I shall look into that.

I was going to ask the same identical question, the pedal travel is huge on our 300 Tdi and it makes city driving a nuisance as well as the freeway.
I noticed where the cable connects there are different holes all numbered from 1-4, what does changing the cable to one of those other holes do???
I keep adjusting the black plastic screw as well the keep the cable tight but even with that adjusted right accelerating is sloppy.
Ours is an auto, are they really this gutless? as ours hates any sort of incline or going up hills on the freeway and most roads and having the accelerator being such a long push makes it hard to know if it should maybe have less travel and more effect on the body it connects to.

Where does it have these holes? On the pump arm or accelerator pedal??

On the pump arm, it has an arm with a cable attached to each end. On one side of the arm are multiple holes.

Uhmmm I haven't noticed this on my pump, i'll have another look!!

I'm hoping these holes would help with the accelerator travel/responsiveness by changing the holes.

That cable goes to the auto kick down on mine.

My auto kickdown is a longgggg way in on the accelerator travel and is a really hard push to engage at that point. It feels awkward. How do I bring it forward a bit and make it less hard to push past?

cruise control
auto kick down.
hand throttle
it depends on which vehicle varient the pump arm is picked for.
you can use other holes for the accelerator cable if you would like to.
moving it closer to the pivot makes it more agressive
moving it away makes it sublte.
DO NOT
move the one for the auto

Ok so if I move it to hole 2 in the picture it will make the throttle more responsive?
