View Full Version : Whats involved in an Isuzu transplant

If I was to take a 110 County V8 and do a 4BD1 transplant what’s involved.

- Obviously I would need a complete 4BD1 engine and ancillaries, engine mounts, etc. (I would hope to source this from a write off Land Rover)
- I believe I would need an Isuzu/Land Rover bellhousing (from the same wreck).
- What are the other obstacles?
- Are there any chassis mods required?
- Wiring, Controls?
- I know I would need to get a Blue Slip inspection (NSW) but as it is a factory option engine no engineering would be required. Is that correct?

You will most likely need an engineers report because the engine mounts have to be changed which is a chassis modification.
Yes, there is wiring etc to be done, but it's relatively straight forward for a diesel as simple as a 4BD1.
If you can manage to source an engine/gearbox from a Landy, it saves having to chase up individual parts such as bell housing, flywheel housing etc. If the engine comes from a truck, like mine did, you might find it more difficult getting all the bits you need, although they are available.

It is far easier if you have all of the parts, including gearbox, etc. from an Isuzu Land Rover, than using an Isuzu truck engine.

Although the later 4BD1T engines from an Isuzu truck are much better (smoother and quieter, more efficient). Downsides are more stuff needs to be changed including gearbox.

You will have to weld new engine mounts on the chassis. They are further forward than the V8 mounts.

Thanks Murray and John will have a read of those threads.

My intension would be to use a "donor" Land rover that should supply all the parts.

Would it be worthwhile swapping over wiring loom from the donor? Or is that more work than modifying the existing v8 loom?

There's really only alternator, starter, oil/temp gauges and EDIC actuator to hook up from the electrics side, so not a big deal. Whether its better to modify the existing loom or use the one from the donor is going to depend more on the condition of each IMO.

If you can't get a Land Rover 4BD1 and get a truck one, I may be interested in swapping the truck flywheel housing and flywheel for the Land Rover items.

You may even be able to talk me into parting with a Land Rover 4BD1 LT85 bellhousing. (but only as part of the above)

BTW: there is a fellow near Windsor with a jig for the engine mount modifications. KLR who will do Isuzu conversions are also in South Windsor.

Ian as Steve said for the electrics.

Just a heads up, make sure you get the relay and wiring with the engine shut down (Steve called it the EDIC). The relay in on the engine bay side of the bulkhead, behind the brake pedal tower (there a 3 relays there and it is the one closest to the centre.
