View Full Version : Ignition Issues - 3.9 V8 with photos

Hi,

I purchased a 1993 3.9 V8 as it was cheap and needed some TLC and I love to tinker.

I have the car running "ok" for now but have some work to do with the ignition system, namely wiring leading to the distributor. I have attached photos below. This cable has a plug on the end that clips onto a part on the side of the distributor. Is there any way to repair this damage or do I need to replace the whole thing and if so where does the wiring run to?

My preference would be to replace the damaged section of the wiring rather than replace it all.

I am also buying new leads, distributor cap and coil as well to get it all refreshed as the previous owner wasn't good with servicing, hence the cheap price.

Looks too technical for me. I just want to know if I can patch the existing red wire with a new section or if there is a replacement part? I don't want to re-invent the wheel and re-wire things as much as it seems others have success.

If anyone can help with answering that it'd be appreciated.

If you are unable to strip, solder and heatshrink a simple set of wires I suggest you visit a land rover wrecker and extract this cable from a donor vehicle. It connects your distributor to the ignition module which should be right next to the ignition coil. Not exactly rocket science either way.

Thanks that's what I wanted to know, where it went from and to. Happy to strip and solder in a new piece of wire. Just wanted to know the source before I ripped open all the plastic shielding.

i'd bare back some wire to a good clean section(no oxidized wire) solder in new section and use some heatshrink then wrap it all or again heatshrink for a sealed end result..be sure not to solder onto old oxidized wire its asking for problems later down the track...good luck and enjoy

Thanks mate that is what I will try and do. I think I should be able to get it done pretty quickly.

On ebay they are selling these:

Land Rover Discovery 1 3 5 3 9 V8 3 PIN Ignition Module Converter Link Lead | eBay (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Land-Rover-Discovery-1-3-5-3-9-V8-3-pin-Ignition-Module-Converter-Link-Lead-/130818316371?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item1e75611853&_uhb=1)

My ignition module is mounted to the distributor. Would this unit allow me to improve that setup or make it easier to arrange the wiring?
