View Full Version : It's never simple, or is it??

I replaced my intercooler hoses with some terrafirma silicone jobbies as my old ones were quite soft. Simple job really, or so it should have been...

Two days later and she lost all power under load, would run fine when idling and rev freely when sitting still, but when she was under load it felt like she was overboosting and fuel was being held back. Check all hoses, everything seems alright.

Check fuses and relays. Fuses all good, relays all energising when they should.

Check wastegate movement, bit stiff but not too bad. Freed her up, problem still there.

Check for oil in loom and at ECU. Oil in both :-( Replaced injector harness, clean ecu connector, problem still there.

Replace MAF, problem still there.

Fit terrafirma egr removal kit, problem still there.

Remove MAP and clean, problem still there.

Drop fuel tank and cut hole in floor for access panel. Swap fuel pump for old working one with dud sender. Problem still there.

Check for power at fuel pump connector... We have a winner no power to fuel pump. Recheck fuses and relays, all seems good although I have now worked out that the TD5 will run on residual pressure in fuel lines without fuses and relays. The injectors will generate a vacuum of sorts to suck enough fuel to run the engine while it's not under load. Put it under load though and it will mimic an overboosting engine.

Swap out fuel pump relay and problem is gone and car runs like a dream again.

If it had happened in isolation then maybe I would have concentrated more on the fuel supply issue instead of what I thought was a reaction to the new hoses. While I am glad to have fixed the problem, it's not a total loss as things that I wanted to do are now done:) The problem is it has tested swmbo's patience big time...

Sorry it's so long winded, but hopefully this can help someone in the future.

Big shout out to to Carl at Green Light Car Care at Thornleigh, he's been amazing through this entire process and I can't recommend him highly enough.

We'll mate I think you did a pretty good job all things considered. The process of elimination can be lengthy but is usually the most accurate for a difficult fault.
Interesting about the TD5 running without the pump. Very high pressures required so I would have thought a good & constant fuel supply would be required. Handy to know all the same. I will pass this tidbit onto my mate who bought my old TD5 Disco.[thumbsupbig]
