Hi, Ron here.
Bit of a problem. I have been putting a 52 80 inch back together over the last few years. I purchased a part restored car that supposedly had a rebuilt motor and box. After fiddling around I finally test drive the old girl and the box sounds like it has two buckets of gravel in it. The noise is the same in high and low range and in all gears. Also the clutch does not engage until about 40 mil from the floor, and that is after adjusting the pedal up as much as you can on the adjuster tread. To make matters worse oil is leaking from the transfer box to the hand break drum. Now, on inspection the box has been out and all the oil and seals appear new. For some reason I refuse to believe that someone would take a box out, put new seals in and not recondition at the same time. I also refuse to believe they would then put it back in with a stuffed clutch. I feel I must be missing something. Any ideas?

Noise - can't comment as I can't hear it. If itis the same in all gears, t is likely to be from the transfer case, and may be a matter of incorrect assembly.

Leaking seals - if leather seals have been fitted, and not used for some time, they will leak for a few weeks. If seals are fitted on worn sealing surfaces, they will not seal.

Clutch. The release fork may be incorrectly assembled on its shaft, or one of the pins transmitting torque from the clutch pedal shaft to the release fork shaft may be broken, especially if not replaced with genuine hardened ones.

Always treat with the greatest of suspicion, what the bloke before you has done!

It is not a big-deal to strip both boxes and then you know that it has been done properly when you put it back together,

Cheers Charlie
