LR Press release

Sunday Times Motor Show Live, Birmingham, 25 May 2004 – Making its world debut at The Sunday Times Motor Show Live at Birmingham is the powerful and refined Land Rover Discovery 3 TDV6. Equipped with an advanced common-rail 2.7-litre power unit, the Land Rover Discovery 3 TDV6 is set to redefine a market that Land Rover has made its own.
Matthew Taylor, Land Rover's managing director says of the new vehicle: ‘The all-new Land Rover Discovery 3 is the purest expression of 21st Century Land Rover. It is modern, boldly designed, packed with high technology and has the broadest breadth of capability in its class. Now with the addition of this new engine, that has already earned critical acclaim in its Jaguar form, the new Discovery 3 TDV6 will offer outstanding power, responsiveness and refinement to our customers when it goes on sale later this year.’

Anticipated to be the major seller both in the UK and in Europe the 2.7-litre, V6, direct-injection, turbocharged diesel engine develops 140 kW (190bhp) of power. This is coupled with an impressive 440 Nm (325 lb-ft) of torque at less than 1,900 rpm endowing the Discovery 3 TDV6 with excellent drivability. The 24-valve engine features the latest technology including a high-pressure common-rail fuel supply, fast-acting electronically-controlled injectors and a turbocharger with variable nozzle control.

The TDV6 engine is extensively developed to meet the unique demands of Land Rover. Its oil sump has pick up points designed to operate at extreme angles and the front crank oil seal is modified to guard against ingress from water, mud or slurry during wading or other off-road driving conditions. Also unique to its Land Rover application, the TDV6 turbo-diesel has an aluminium ladder frame at the bottom of the crankcase to improve rigidity.

The all-aluminium, 4.4-litre V8 petrol engine provides a powerful alternative. Developing 220 kW (295 bhp) of power and 425 Nm (314 lb-ft) of torque, this power unit features Variable Camshaft Timing that means the engine responds instantly to driving demands. Maximum fuel efficiency is provided by multi-hole fuel injectors and a 32-valve layout.

Power is fed through a manual or automatic ZF six-speed gearbox on the new diesel model. The automatic unit is standard for the V8 petrol engine. A two-speed transfer box shares the drive between the front and rear axles and features an electrically-controlled locking differential. A similar unit is optional in the rear differential for maximum off-road traction.

The Discovery 3 is based on Land Rover’s innovative Integrated Body-Frame™ structure, which allows Land Rover to deliver all the comfort, refinement and on-road poise of a monocoque, while continuing to set new standards in off-road performance.

All-round independent suspension riding on variable-height air springs results in precise road manners and supple confidence off-road. The braking system features large disc brakes all-round to provide maximum stopping power, with the TDV6 boasting 317 and 325 mm discs on the front and rear respectively and the V8 337 and 350 mm. The Discovery 3 has a comprehensive array of slip control systems including dynamic stability control, electronic traction control and the award-winning hill descent control to cope with any situation on- or off-road.

Harnessing the performance of the Discovery 3 to cope with a variety of conditions is made simple with the sophistication offered by the new Terrain Response system, which makes its production debut in the Discovery 3, following its preview in the Range Stormer concept vehicle.

Using only a single chunky control, the driver simply dials in the appropriate surface confronting the vehicle, choosing from a general programme for normal driving, a special programme for slippery conditions (dubbed ‘grass/gravel/snow’), and three covering off-road surfaces – mud/ruts, sand and rock crawl. Terrain Response automatically tunes the vehicle’s systems including engine and gearbox response, electronic slip control systems sensitivity and even ride height to optimise driveability and comfort as well as maximising traction.

The interior features the iconic spaciousness typical of the Discovery nameplate. The driver enjoys Land Rover's traditional 'command' seating position, while all the rear passengers get stadium seating – progressively higher than the seats in front – offering a clearer view. The optional third row of seats serve up great comfort, and are big enough to accommodate 95th percentile adults. This cleverly designed seating, fit for seven adults, further improves the Discovery 3's outstanding versatility, including fold-flat rear seats in both second and third rows, to give huge load-carrying ability.

Careful choice of materials for the internal trim enhances the airy practicality of the Discovery 3 and the travelling experience is improved by the latest in-car ‘infotainment’ system options that include state-of-the-art on- and off-road navigation and a harman/kardon ‘Logic 7’ digital surround sound hi-fi system, with control being through a widescreen LCD display with voice recognition.

Land Rover’s managing director, Matthew Taylor, says of the Discovery 3: ‘It’s a true Land Rover, benefiting from a clarity of purpose and conviction that’s evident from its clean design, versatility and outstanding dynamic characteristics. Like all of the new Land Rovers, it’s great to drive on-road as well as being best-in-class off-road. The Discovery 3 will reinforce Land Rover’s command of a market sector that it created with the original Discovery. It’s a bold and distinctive design that’s coupled with innovative features and a range of powerful engines to provide an unforgettable driving experience whether on- or off-road.’

MATTHEW TAYLOR SPEECH, SUNDAY TIMES MOTOR SHOW LIVE, BIRMINGHAM 2004.

Ladies and gentlemen – Welcome to Birmingham and to the Sunday Times Motor Show Live. This is our home show, and therefore a very special one for Land Rover.
Our factory is barely five miles from here, in Solihull, and since Ford’s acquisition of Land Rover four years ago, over £450 million has been invested in the plant, to build advanced new models such as the all-new Discovery 3.

Gaydon, half an hour down the M40, is where the new Discovery 3 was designed, conceived and partly developed – although the test programme also took us to the Nurburgring, Death Valley, the Nardo test track in Italy, Namibia, South Africa, Australia, Canada, Sweden and just about every other place with extreme weather, or an inhospitable terrain.

The UK is not just Land Rover's home: it remains our biggest market – despite strong growth in many other parts of the world. 2004 is on track to be our fifth consecutive record year – extraordinary when you consider this outstanding new vehicle to my left won’t even go on sale until the autumn. This year we should sell approaching 50,000 vehicles in the UK, which is about 2 % of the total market – an extraordinary performance for a specialist, premium 4x4 manufacturer.

Our sales continue to grow because we have desirable products, a fine dealer body, and a constant stream of excellent vehicles. And that product offensive is not going to slow down. The Range Rover, launched in 2002, was the first of five all-new Land Rovers to be unveiled over the following six years. Well, the all-new Discovery 3 is number two. So that’s three all-new vehicles to come before 2008. And this from a manufacturer that, until the latest Range Rover’s launch, had produced only seven all-new vehicles in 54 years.

That’s progress for you.

And nothing better sums up the progress of this company than the all-new Discovery 3. It is all-new. Nothing is carried over from the existing model, itself the best-selling full-size 4x4 in the UK- and it has been, year in, year out, since its launch in 1989.

The new Discovery 3 is modern, premium, technologically cutting edge, and a huge step ahead for the Discovery nameplate, for Land Rover, and, we believe, for the segment as a whole.

It is the roomiest and most versatile vehicle in its class – featuring seven proper adult-sized seats. Even I can sit comfortably in the rear. The Discovery 3 is the first production vehicle to get our patented Terrain Response system. Over time, you’ll see it across the Land Rover range. Like all Land Rover innovations, Terrain Response is smart technology. It’s easy to use, and makes the driver’s job simpler, not more baffling. It optimises driveability and comfort as well as maximising traction. The driver simply chooses one of five terrain settings via a rotary switch from on-road to extreme off-road. It's like having an expert alongside you, to help you get the best out of the vehicle whatever the conditions, on-road or off.

Add height-adjustable fully independent air suspension, high- and low-range transmission that is electronically selected, and we’re confident that the Discovery 3 is convincingly the best off-roader in its sector.

But you would expect that from a Land Rover.

What’s perhaps more surprising is the way it goes on-road.

Making its world debut here today is the new highly sophisticated common rail turbodiesel version. It has 190bhp, 440 Newton metres of torque, and the engine is built here in the UK, at Ford’s worldwide centre of excellence for diesel engines in Dagenham. This 2.7-litre V6, already critically acclaimed in its Jaguar form, is one of the most advanced diesel engines in the world, offering superb performance and economy. Technical highlights for Land Rover include a specially developed single turbocharger to improve low-end torque. Other adaptations tailored for Land Rover are enhanced dust and water-proofing, and revised breathing to enable the car to wade rivers as well as cruise highways. This new turbodiesel will come with six-speed manual, or the same sophisticated six-speed automatic as used with the acclaimed V8 engine.

The 300bhp 4.4-liter V8 petrol engine, specially adapted for Land Rover, is an outstanding power unit for a great road car. Add a six-speed electronically controlled automatic gearbox. And that fully independent suspension, which not only helps off-road, but greatly improves ride and handling on-road, too.

Add a few more high-tech touches, like adaptive headlights that swivel with the steering and help you to see around corners, and a DVD-based navigation system that includes off-road guidance. The Discovery 3 is awash with clever technology, as you’ll see when you get a chance to pore over it in just a few minutes time.

It is a magnificent road car.

Fabulously versatile, too. Even the rear pair of seats on the seven-seat version, are big enough for 95th percentile adults. Note the easy entry and exit, and the sheer practicality of that cabin. The rear seats – all five of them – fold flat into the floor, creating an SUV of awesome load-carrying capability. We think it has the most spacious and versatile cabin in its class, as I'm sure you'll agree once you've had a chance to examine it for yourselves.

The cabin has been crucial in the design of this vehicle. Geoff Upex, Land Rover’s design director, describes the Discovery 3 as being designed from the inside out. Great 'command' driving position, a superb passenger environment, with rear stadium seating, fantastic headroom, and panoramic windows offer a great view of all the fabulous places that the Discovery 3 can take you. So we started with that versatility, that comfort, that well-being. Form follows function. It is an honest vehicle, like all Land Rovers.

It has an asymmetric rear tailgate because that makes the load height lower and improves the reach-in distance when loading the trunk. It has an air vent on one side only, because that’s all it needs. It has a stepped roof because that gives more rear headroom.

It’s also a design of great conviction. Like all great designs, it barely changed during its gestation. The first sketches of the Discovery 3 look just like the vehicle you see today.

Ladies and gentlemen, the Discovery 3 is the most technologically advanced and boldest Land Rover that the company has ever built. It’s a car of engineering and design conviction that reflects the confidence that we have in this nameplate and this company.

We’re convinced it will be a success, here in Britain, our number one market, – and also in the other 140 different countries where Land Rovers are sold.

Our home is the UK. But our brand is truly global.
