Have a really grouse manual V8 S1 Disco that goes and sounds fanbloodytastic. But through unforeseen circumstances I now need to worry about fuel economy. I love the rest of the Disco so see no point in selling and buying another.

Am considering an engine/tranny swap to a TDi300/auto. Will rebuild and enhance the TDi as required (chip? bigger turbo? bigger intercooler? exhaust're-tune injectors+fuel pressure?).

Has anyone done this? Whats the likely buy price for a TDi+auto? What can I expect for a mint 3.9L V8, new high lift cam, valve seats redone, new clutch, 5spd exc cond.??

Whats the potential for performance improvement with TDi 300's? I'm not keen on the electronic gizmo factor associated with TD5's.

Any experience/advice from the Wise Ones in this forum would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

entails some very major mods

diesel chassis and v8 chassis are different

mounts and other bits in different places....

i looked at it but it was going to be cheaper to trade the v8 on a decent diesel.

but anything is possible if your pockets are deep enough....

would be a hell of a lot cheaper and easier just to convert to gas but retain the petrol tank just for Convenience maybe a split tank if room is a problem

have fun

If a V8 gets 18l / 100 km and a Tdi uses 10 the the cost saving at a $1.00/l over 15,000 km a year is $1200. I reckon it would take, at that rate, at least 5 years to payback the cost even if you could get an auto Tdi installed for $9,000 with $3,000 back for the V8.

I don't think that it warrants the effort. As suggested the more effective way is to trade vehicles.

Cars are the opposite of synergy:

The cost of a vehicle is less than the sum of the cost of its parts.
