We went over to Straddie earlier today to retrieve what I believe to be a Series IIa for Lachy to do up as his first car.
It has the Holden 186 HP engine in it, and an overdrive.
Not too much rust, almost none in the chassis, just in the typical bulkhead spots.
It has the lights on the wings, but the VIN number doesn't seem to correspond with a late SIIa - 25302326a. The grill is a Series 3.
The gauge has the wording "Long Station Wagon" on it, and the plate on the rear says Solihull, Warwickshire, England.
It has the safari roof with vents, and fully lined interior.
We got it started, fresh fuel and clean the points, and drove it home with a one-day permit.
Not sure where we'll start with it, but would like to fit Lachy's 3-bearing diesel at some point.

Yep I agree - that chassis number is very close to some Ex-Army ones on REMLR which are listed as 1963.

Cheers,

Pete

P.S. Nice Landy !!

Thanks Pete, yes that may be the case.

It will be interesting to find out a bit more about its history.

253 is the prefix for a CKD 2a 109. The a suffix makes it early 60's

So the lights on the wings might be from a later model vehicle.
I'll have to find the chassis numbers and see what they reveal.

You do know where to find it? Left rear spring hanger.

Have a look on the left hand side rear spring hanger for the chassis number.

Had a look and I can't see a number there. I assume it will be stamped?

You could have joined anytime, all that is needed is an interest in series vehicles;)

We have a trip coming up 15-16th Feb you may be interested in. Going to Kyogle to the Kenworth Truck Museu?. Staying at the showgrounds, lunch catered for and dinner at the Club?? I don't think you can see it so ring me if interested;)

Yes stamped on the left hand rear spring hanger. sometimes chalk rubbed over will reveal it

Sounds good, although it would have to be a Defender trip - we won't have the 109 ready for a while I suspect!

Defenders are fine, we don't discriminate with Land Rovers:D

Thanks Cobber.
Lachy is away on school camp this week, but I passed on your message to him and he said to say thankyou.
We will get a bit of a resto thread happening shortly, and I'm sure that will help keep him (and me) motivated as we go along.
We're still trying to get a proper ID on the truck, the chassis numbers are being elusive! I can't wait to get started, but unfortunately work has a nasty habit of getting in the way!
Regards Scott

Have a look abit lower down on the hanger than your pic shows. Just above the actual spring mount. A pic of mine attached to give you a clue. You may have to clean some layers of paint away.

Definitely no stamped numbers where they should be.

Do you think that they could they be on the Front RHS hanger (i.e. UK import)?

those last two pics show that it looks like the number has been ground off.

it might have had a chassis change or something...

That's what I thought Harry. There are a couple of anomolies/anachronisms that have me thinking there have been some component changes over the years. I supoose it's nearly 50 years old, so only to be expected.

If you can't find a number, but can prove it isn't stolen there was a way of stamping a new no in but I do not know the current rules

Well we are making some progress (work keeps getting in the way during the week).

Here's the apprentice changing plugs, leads and points, and a rear-end shot with real Landrover lights - they look much nicer.

A bit of general wiring tidying-up, and some more penetrating fluid around the place, and that's about it for today.
