Starter not turning engine.
1. No signs of anything at all.
a) key start (1967 on) - faulty solenoid wiring or earth. Faulty ignition switch.
b) Push button starter - faulty switch, bad connection or bad engine/chassis earth.
2. Click only.
a) Faulty solenoid
both - faulty connections, especially engine/chassis earth and battery connections
3. Starter engages but won't turn engine. Faulty connections or armature is poling.
4. Starter spins without engaging flywheel. Sticky starter pinion, disassemble and clean - do not oil.
5. Starter engages and spins, but does not turn engine. Broken spring on Bendix drive.

Probably either a bad connection somewhere or the starter is poling due to worn bushes. Possibly sticking brushes.
I would start by checking the actual voltage (when operated) between the starter and the battery terminal - both on the power side and between the starter body and the battery negative pole. Neither should be over about one volt. If these voltage drops are uneven, then there is clearly a bad connection. If they are even but above this, then most likely the starter is drawing excess current due to poling (the bushes are worn allowing the armature to touch the stator poles). Or the engine is too hard to turn. Check that it can be turned by hand - could be mechanical problems, such as water and hence rust in a bore.
If there is no excess voltage drop, and the starter is just down on power, suspect brushes sticking.
Hope this helps.

gday,
sounds like the cables need cleaned to get proper connections, start with positive leads and clean , then all the neg. ones. had that happen recently and all it was, was dirty connections. cheers

I got caught out recently by a battery that would do everything properly most of the time, but occasionally it would not crank fast enough, the cranking voltage was around 6 volts at this time. standing voltage 12.5 charging 13.8.
After much work on starter and cleaning terminals etc, the problem remained.
I replaced the battery and all is well !

Well, tell us what you found - it may help someone in the future looking for answers when they have the same problem.

I was going to suggest a new battery, as I had the same thing.
I changed leads, changed starter motors, and even some old battery's that I thought might be OK. Slow weak cranking, and almost impossible to start.
Popped in a new battery, and she spins like a madman, and fires up straight away:D
