Hi all.

Does anyone have a schematic showing how to put the 4wd selector mechanism back together ? I got a 1973 Series 3 in bits and buckets, and while most things are obvious, this is defeating me. Just need to know where that spring goes, and if there are supposed to be any other parts ? Apart from the yellow knob which I can work out :-)

Or some photos of an assembled one from a kind person please ?

This might sound like a dumb question but I've only ever had Discoverys, 110s, 130s and suchlike so new to all these coloured knobs.

Thanks,

Dougie

Not clear which spring is "that" spring, but assuming you are talking about the external linkage, not the internals, the only spring involved is the one that goes between the yellow knob and the transmission tunnel.

A manual is what you need - see "shop" just below the banner at the top of this page.

Thanks both, so the spring just goes around the rod, between the transmission tunnel inside the cab and the knob. Presumably the load it is under when 4wd is engaged holds down the rod, because the spring acts to force the knob upwards all the time. Primitive but effective !! Kind of like the rest of the car....:-)

Hi Dougie

The box is automatically in 4WD in low range, in high range the pin releases the selector mechanism to lock 4WD. The pin cannot re-engage in the selector rod until the box is put into low range. The spring tension is merely waiting for the selector to be in the correct position and then the pin will engage under the tension and the yellow button will pop up.

I always fit a washer below the spring to protect the hole in the transmission hump from wear and make a little better weather seal.

The Official Manual has a specification for the length of the spring during refitting. It says:

Fit the ferrule, spring, and locknut to the lever, depress the lever and adjust the locknut until the compressed spring length is 58mm (2.312 inches), then fit the knob and tighten the locknut.

That should do it. Worked for me :).
