View Full Version : Pie shops charging for sauce.

Am I the only one who gets cranky paying 30c for a ****y little sachet of sauce? Especially for my pie that I have just been charged close to $5 for.
Is it un-Australian or just plain wrong?

I agree but has been going on in many shops for ever - pushing 60 now and can remember when I was in primary school and having to pay 1/2 penny for sauce to get my pie.

I think it is a good idea.
I don't have sauce on my pie, so if there was no extra charge for the sauce, I would be subsidising those who are not satisfied with the taste of the pie as it comes out of the oven.

I for one dislike dead horse on my pies and am happy to not susidise the lovers of the salty red stuff! There's nothing more annoying than fronting up at a takeaway and having to specify NO SAUCE NO SALT PLEASE every bloody time and then having to hand back the burger/pie/chips because its been bled on. Make the addicts pay! :p

So are you advocating that those who don't use sauce should be subject to a "great big tax" in the form of increased pie prices to subsidise your consumption of a tomato based condiment?

Went to the Mudgee pie shop recently and got a couple of pies for my lady and myself, paid and when I asked for sauce they threw in a couple of sachets and didn't charge. I was stunned. What should I do? Remind them of the cost of a sachet? Throw money at them? Turn and run for the door? I could feel their eyes boring into me as I stood rooted to the spot. Then another customer made an order, their stare was averted so I slowly sidled my way nonchalantly to the door with pent up terror expectant to the call "Ya haven't paid for ya sauce". I made it out unnoticed, my heart pounding, my eyes bulging pool balls; I have never felt so alive.

Speaking of sauce, I get sick of asking for no sauce on my burgers and then have to supervise the preparation of such to ensure I get none.
Don't get me started on BBQ sauce on pizza.

The real question is why are so many pies so ordinary these days that sauce is necessary.....

I can totally relate with my non-sauce loving friends.
Can't stand the stuff, and so many places just throw it on with no second thought. Constant vigilance is required.
Even got to the point that I changed shops where I used to get my lunch. The original would try and put sauce on everything, every-time, despite repeated requests, and catching them right at the point of the bottle in their hand. Then they would laugh & say sorry. Wore a bit thin after a few months.

Ah, yes. Having to ask every time for no sauce, mayo or gherkins on any burger I get for my wife wears a little thin. And they don't charge any less for it either.

HP? That was fine until they changed the recipe. I threw out the last bottle that I bought because it tasted so bad. Brown sauce on bacon and eggs is compulsory though. There should be some sort of UN convention on it.
I have to say though, that if a pie is enhanced by sauce, it's a pretty poor pie. ;)

Fast food burger chain? A friends son works that one and he said they hate 'personalising' burgers. He says it only comes like it says on the menu! Some requests are simply rediculous - double toasted buns, rare or underdone burgers (not really possible btw), only the green leafy bits of lettuce, tomato between the cheese and patty, apparently it goes on and on.
As for suace, I don't really like tomatoe, more of a BBQ or HP man:)

I can remember when they either put sauce on the lid of the pie or else they stabbed the lid with the squeeze bottle and pumped it into the pie.
When I go to golden arches I have a real problem...chips without salt ( have to wait for next batch and hope they don't salt them) and coke zero without ice. Now that last one is a doozy as I am sure they are trained to scoop ice and 3/4 fill the cup so little coke is added to fill the cup. I like a full cup of what I am drinking. Jim

Out of the chains, SWMBO will only eat Hungry Jacks. And they get the "personalised" burger wrong probably 50% of the time. Not worth ever going through a drive through, because the drive through would more often than not be followed by a drive back. :(
Sauce? I'm not fussy. Except for some fermented fish sauce that I was served in Vietnam. That was definitely outside my taste range. :p

what I love is the fact that a lot of places that use to have the free sauce in a squeezey bottle had to stop providing it for a couple of reasons.
firstly ****wits who would intentionally make a mess or squirt them at walls.
secondly OH+S and foodies who would whinge if the sauce bottle wasnt immediately closed, cleaned an refrigerated... (who refirgerates tomato sauce?)
what you used to be able to buy for a couple of bucks and get a gallon of then decant and give away because a gallon would last you a fortnight now has to be purchased in single serves with pretty labels, and extra rubbish. at about 300000 times the simple easy and environmentally friendly way...

Maffra Bakery - still squirt sauce straight into pie from bottle - no charge. Pies aren't bad either.
Huonville Banjos - girl behind counter refuses charging for sauce given it is provided in big bottles at 'condiments' station - thinks company policy is bull$h!t - she's destined for greatness.
I'm not sure if its because I think single serve sauce is such a ridiculous development, or because I'm a massive tight ar$e, but given I have sauce in the camper all the time - I usually just squirt some on from my own bottle - I try not to be seen doing it of course!
I promise to wash my hands after touching my stick too.

you should try walking into one of those shops that sell sauce with a bottle of your own pay for your pie then sit down sauce it up and munch away...
Proper aussie shops dont care, but the ones run in less than "the oker spirit of australianisms" go right off their little monie grubbing tress...
just occasionally I like to tell them that their sauces don't comply with my dietry requirements and them making complaints against it is discriminatory, just to see the look on their faces.
when they go on about bull dust what is it I tell them peanut allergy, when the go on about their pies have the same issue I ask them to show me where that is signposted and are they aware of the penatlies for providing food that has the potential to be fatal to someone who has worse reactions than mine....
Its usually about then I get to eat my pie in peace slathered in whatever sauce I bought with me.
(Just in case, as advertised elsewhere, yes rocking the boat, especially by the judicious application of some nanny poliies regulations rules and guidlines is a sport Im attempting to take to olympic levels)

I just call it bad marketing. Take a hit on the sauce if it brings customers back. I wonder how many stores have factored sauce into the price, that in fact you're still paying for without realising it.
All a moot point for me - I refer to tomato sauce as tucker ****er :)

I agree its un australian and besides I'm sure there's plenty of margin in the price of the pie to cover it my local bakery does not charge for it. An I don't put it on a good pie does not need sauce. A servo pie how ever must be drowned in it

Thats exactly right it does but when I lived in the UK the tomato sauce lived in the cupboard with the HP sauce.
I came to Oz and Ian started putting it in the fridge and i was like WTF??!

There is a simple solution Dave which my Dad taught me. In all his cars he kept a small box which had salt, vinegar and sauce in it for just such occasions as a meat pie or fish and chips. He was a Yorkshireman, so paying a few cents extra for condiments really cut against the grain for him. He said he had already paid for those things at home, so why pay for them again...:D
Remember the Yorkshireman's creed -

Added salt is bad for for your health, as is sugar, pepper and sauce. Why should my pie, coffee etc cost more merely to subsidise others consumption of the condiments. There is enough salt in the foods themselves for health and I use none of them.
BTW: pies are so bad these days because Government regulations specify that a meat pie only needs to contain 25% meat and that can be any of the meat that's unsaleable as a specified cut including grissel, tripe, kidney, sinue and tendons.

From Web Dr
"Next to salt, black pepper is one of the most popular food seasonings used in America. Black pepper is made from a fruit called peppercorn, which can be cooked in hot water and dried. During the drying process, the portion of the fruit around the seed darkens and turns black. This substance is then ground into the familiar black powder known as black pepper. But is black pepper bad for a person's health? Black pepper contains antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-bacterial properties which could help to prevent certain types of infection by reducing free radical damage, and also promotes the health of the digestive tract. Not only does black pepper help a person get the most benefit possible from any other foods consumed along with it, the outer layer of the peppercorn stimulates the breakdown of fat cells, which may aid a person with the process of losing weight. Black pepper also stimulates the taste buds and increases hydrochloric acid secretion, which improves digestion and reduces intestinal gas. Black pepper is also an excellent source of manganese, a good source of dietary fiber, and a very good source of iron and vitamin K, all things a person needs for good health. However, black pepper also contains tiny amounts of a carcinogen called safrole. When large amounts of safrole were injected into lab rats, it caused cancer. This research lead to people wondering if black pepper could be dangerous. The truth is that there are more benefits to eating black pepper than there are risks associated with consuming it. A person would have to ingest very large amounts of black pepper in order to even slightly increase their risk of cancer. However, black pepper can be an irritant of the GI tract, urinary tract, and prostate, so it is not recommended that a person ingest it frequently in large amounts."
Don't have salt in the house. Actually eat pies without sauce (a good pie shouldn't need it), but I will stick to having food with my pepper.
My lady prises the pastry top off the pie then applies the sauce to the filling, puts the lid back on, bites in and spills half the content then looks at me with a "Gee, I didn't know it was going to do that" look.

I have a very simple answer to your riddle, if he's too tight to buy sachets of sauce, he's too tight to buy anything more than Aldi home brand, so Heinz is out... considering a 500mL bottle of Colway (the Aldi brand) is $1.49 (I believe) then it's a considerable saving... it's half a litre vs. 6 sachets!

I enjoy a good pie about once a month :) from my local pie shop, they make their pies with real meat, and very little gravy,my favourite is Beef,Bacon & Cheese,at about $4.95 a pop,no need for sauce as it spoils it,locally made by a very successful bakery on the Island, makes those from a well known S.E.Qld chain seem pretty ordinary.
I buy once a month only because I could become a daily eater and both my waist and wallet would suffer.

Moccas is still there. It was originally started by ex navy cook. I think he sold the rights when Port Douglas boomed. When Mocca owned it you had to get in early if you wanted a pie. He sold out daily. I grew up on them. I used to go fishing off the old sugar wharf as a kid and get a Mocca pie for lunch. It has changed address a few times since Mocca was alive. The original old shop is now a big block of shops. The new shop is just off the main drag. They still taste the same. I had one a few weeks ago and got free sauce. Best pies ever. I am a pie eater from way back.

Well the Australian way - when I was younger - my local Milk bar Aussie owner would get a pie out of the oven then shout " YOU WANT SAUCE IN IM??" -If it was a yes, he would turn his back, plunge his thumb in the pie & squirt a generous amount of tom sauce in the hole..:D
Never really worried me..it cost nought. I suppose he started turning his back after someone complained..

My gripe sort of fits in here, so I didn't start a new thread...
Being fat and lazy like I am, I grabbed take away tonight after a long week at work. Ordered some chips and stuff, as well as 2 Hamburgers 'with the lot' for me and SWMBO. Been using this chippy for years, but when I got home I discovered the unthinkable! NO BEETROOT!!!!!
I rang them up as I know the owners well and asked what happened to the beetroot - their reply was 'Sorry Gav, that's an extra now'
No dramas, I'll know for next time, even though I was a bit ticked as we always have beetroot on our burgers from there.
So, do I call the ACCC now and dob them in for false advertising???:D
So, does everyone else's local chippy do this or am I being ripped and should I take my business elsewhere?:D

But that's what differentiates "real" burgers from FSR fatty, salty, sugary pap (yes they are now Fast Service Restaurants!!).
I would expect it to be on all burgers, especially "the lot".

bugger pies altogether these days, i used to get my smoko at the local bakery all the time but then one day something changed and instead of that chunky meat with thick tasty gravy and one kind of pastry on the bottom and another golden coloured pastry on the top, now you can only buy these mass produced, made off site pastey white and can only be described as half sized mince filled crap. So now i just get subway with a choice of aoli, honey mustard, thousand island, etc etc sauces,

is this the PIE equivalent of
" My brothers fathers sister knew a guy that had a land rover break down"
I must of had thousands and never a MB,,
In fact the last 5 years of curry pies from the same pie truck have been some of the best ever!

Speaking of sauce, I get sick of asking for no sauce on my burgers and then have to supervise the preparation of such to ensure I get none.
100%!!!
I don't mind if it's a nice home-made tomato sauce in which I know the ingredients, etc etc...
But Heinz, masterfoods junk is just horrible. I don't know people can even smell it let alone eat it.
Sauce makes pretty much everything worse...

Used to work with a bloke about 20 years ago, he would always order what he called a 'maggot bag' every day for morning tea from the canteen. Always made me smile.
One morning he pulled out something a bit chewier than usual - part of a cows ear. Never got any maggots though, but you live in hope.
The blast furnace canteen was not known for its gourmet food.

As an aside, my grandson started school this year and the flamin tuck shop has a website whereby the parents can log in and pre order the kids food. You should see the menu...from sushi to pies and rolls, sandwiches and even pizza.Talk about spoiled.
