I had my 2001 F1 Jatco transmission rebuilt before Xmas ($4k). I've since started having problems where the auto is stuck in first gear from a cold start. I drive for few hundred meters in 1st gear and suddenly I feel a big thump/jump forward and hill descent warning light and F4 flashing on my display. Turning the car off and on after sometime when the car gets warm will erase error message on display with my car no longer in "limp mode" and everything appears ok. However the next morning the same thing happens when the car is cold.

I'd reported this to my auto mechanic when the Freebie went in for the first follow-up service after the auto rebuild and they said they couldn't find anything.

My concern is that this problem is becoming significantly worse and taking longer to clear as the car warms up.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

If its going in to limp mode with F4 flashing on the dash, there will be a fault logged in the auto ECU.
A speed sensor issue will cause these symptoms and log faults.
There was a service bulletin about the wiring inside the box being affected by the fluid and causing these issues.

It doesn't always go into F4 mode and I went to my old LR mechanic today to scan the codes only to find he has moved out of Acacia Ridge.

This morning, before leaving home, I started the engine and let it warm-up to operating temperature. Before heading off I cycled slowly through all gears before starting off. The gear changes were a little "notchy" for the first km or so then it ran fine all day....

Any recommendations for a cheap code reader for a 2001 Freebie 1 would also be appreciated.

Cheers.....

You can get cheap OBD2 readers but they will not read all faults.
I see you have a P38 as well, It might be worth getting a hawkeye BA5070 | Hawkeye Diagnostic Tool (http://www.paddockspares.com/ba5070-hawkeye-diagnostic-tool.html)
They are not cheap but will do what you require and it can unlocked to do both Land Rovers you have. I have one of these and its unlocked for FL1, FL2 & D2 and I'm happy with what I can do with it.
There is one on here for sale unlocked for a Discovery 2, But it would be more economical for you to buy new as you get a unlock with it and you don't have a D2.

$770 for the tool to do everything I'd want now and in the near future....

Land Rover Diagnostic Tool Hawkeye Defender Discovery Range Rover Freelander | eBay (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Land-Rover-Diagnostic-Tool-HawkEye-Defender-Discovery-Range-Rover-Freelander-/200973224718?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2ecaf00b0e&_uhb=1)

Cheers...

You will need the grey adapter to talk with the security system on your freelander (to program keys, alarm faults, etc)
BA5077 | Land Rover grey adapter (Teves MK25 EWS 3) (http://www.paddockspares.com/ba5077-land-rover-grey-adapter-teves-mk25-ews-3.html)

To work with your Freelander and Range Rover you will need
BA5075 | Additional vehicle unlock code (http://www.paddockspares.com/ba5075-additional-vehicle-unlock-code.html)
With this they email you a code to email to Omitec (they do the software for the Hawkeye) and Omitec email you a code back to enter into hawkeye. (you will need to do this for the free unlock as well when you get it new)

also with the Range Rover you will need this for Air suspension.
BA5073 | Land Rover Air Suspension cable (http://www.paddockspares.com/ba5073-land-rover-air-suspension-cable.html)

This sound weird that you need to buy these extra leads, but Omitec did the software for the Land Rover T4 and its the same for the T4

I got mine from the links I'm sending you and it worked out cheaper and I had it in a week.

Woko,

thanks for the links, I'll look into it as it will be definitely cheaper in the long term.

My LR Service mate just charged me $50 for the following info:

P0732 Transmission Ratio in gear 2
P0733 Transmission Ratio in gear 3

Looks like a trip back to the Tranny Specialist

It will be a speed sensor or wiring to it.
Here is a link with resistance tests for the JF506e Jatco box. (they are used in heaps of different cars)

Get your tranny specialist to check when cold.
