Hey Landrover gurus,
I have discovered that the seal on the imput shaft of my 4 bolt steering box is leaking.
What I would like to know is it possible to to get this seal. And is it possible to get it out and replace it from the out side.
Cheers,
Dan.

I have done this in position, an awkward job, quite a few years ago and the seal is still holding (not on my current vehicle)
From memory this is how it was done
1 - remove the connecting steering shaft
2 - remove the circlip
3 - remove the old seal (I used 2 self tappers on opposite sides of the seal and withdrew it
4 - I machined up a jig to get the new seal back in squarely
5 - replace the circlip quite difficult I still remember losing one
6 - join up the shaft
7 - top up the oil

Thanks bundalene, good info. Now does anyone know where I might get the seal?

Land Rover Dealer, Karcraft, BMI, Rovacraft, probably Ebay ... the list goes on.
Specify your VIN and you can get input / output seals or the whole steering box kits.

I found the new seal being more springy would not let the circlip down into the groove so I made up a "special tool" by grinding down a tube spanner which had a correct ID to match the shaft so it fitted inside the casing.
I was then able to tap the circlip into the groove.
I found it was ok to do in situ other than that difficulty.

I sourced a single seal from local bearing suppliers, a high pressure version of your average 'TC' type seal.....can't remember the size now tho.
If your having difficulty removing the old seal, start the engine with the seal retaining circlip removed....makes a bit of a mess, but gets the seal out.
I also machined up a seal installer tool to get the new seal in square. Also used it to seat the circlip.
