My soundproofing kit finally made it, after Noisekiller decided to send it. And this weekend I have time to install it. All 30kg of it! There seems to be one bit of kit for every panel in the Defender. Expectations are high!

I'll be updating this thread with the results. And as the camera will be out, I'll take a few pix of the recovery hooks, rear cargo system etc etc as there were requests for those too. The GPS kit is already online at:

By the way did anyone here have a black D90 at the Mine Host in Broken Hill during the Challenge?

Rob Davis and I fitted the kit today, except for the cargo bay sections (need to pull the false floor out) and a few pieces that were either too hard or probably not designed for Aussie models.

The 30kg is for the whole kit, not for the bonnet. Only three pieces for the bonnet underside.

Results; will post later, but at idle it reduced noise by about 5db. On the road, by about 2db, measuring at 50, 80 and 100.

We also tested Rob's car, and that was 2-3db noisier than mine without the kit as he has his roofrack fitted.

It's not a huge difference, but it is noticeable. When I stop driving the thing long enough to do some more work on it I will fit the tricky pieces and do the bitument paint. I'm hoping that'll be good for another 1-2 db.

The kit is easy enough to fit, if you're good at jigsaws. We spent a bit of time saying "no, I think I've got your bit here". Some instructions a little cryptic, or maybe they're for UK models. A few pieces needed various amounts of trimming with a Stanley knife, but nothing major. I think my Defender was already somewhat soundproofed as it had LR mats in it.

So not quite a Lexus!
