I've been advised by my mechanic that I MAY have a slight leakage from the transmission in my 2007 3.2ltr Freelander 2 and been told to keep an eye on it for the next week to see if it's actually leaking. I know I have very slight seepage from the power steering pump and am thinking that over time, will cause sprayed oil over parts of the engine around that area. My question is, looking at the engine bay from the front of the car (passenger side to my right) whereabouts is the transmission located??

Ok, which is where the power steering pump is so there may be a chance that it could be spray from there........ maybe.......hopefully!!??!!

It will be on the right. As far right as the front of the engine

Thanks woko, I'll keep an eye around that area. The power steering pump appears to be just above what I think the transmission is, as I mentioned hopefully is only seepage from the power steering pump, that will save a small fortune I hope!! Rather replace a power steering pump than a transmission!!

Freemander, I've got the same car as you and have similar leaks, which are most evident when the cover is removed off the bottom of the engine bay area (underneath the car). I don't think there is a great deal to worry about so long as you are not loosing masses of oil of course. Keep an eye on your oil levels and just monitor them over the next few weeks, months and if there is no substantial change don't worry too much about it.
Remember, with all Land Rovers, they don't leak oil-they mark their territory!

Thanks Richard93Vogue, not masses of oil from either p/steer pump or transmission, and my mechanic said to bring the car back in a few weeks time to check again as he's cleaned everything off. We have two Landy's in the family and all this time I'm thinking it's the Disco (older car) but now I may have to put my tail between my legs. My mechanic advised not to panic just yet as may only be slight, we'll see how we go over the next few weeks.

Hey Richard93Vogue,
I have finally resolved the ongoing annoying leak/s as mentioned above and could hopefully be the answer to your similar leaks. I've found out that its not the transmission or the power steering pump that's leaking, but coming from the vacuum pump at the top of the engine next to the battery/air filter box see photo. Its a common problem with the i6 engine and a cheap fix, just a simple o ring. Maybe worth investigating!?!?

Thanks for that Freemander! :) I will most certainly be investigating that one this week (after I get my Rangie running right...it is behaving badly at the moment).
Thanks for the heads up on that one, I hadn't heard of that one before.

If you shine a torch between the battery and air filter box and underneath the vacuum pump and see a small pool of oil sitting on top of the transmission area, then that may be your problem. Oil then makes it's way down the side of the transmission (which can be seen if you remove the passenger side inner guard) and ends up dripping from what looks like the seal (though being the wrong colour oil which just confused the issue even more). I've yet to have the o ring replaced, it's being booked in as soon as the part arrives. Hopefully an easy and cheap fix so you can spend more $$$ on the Rangie!!
