Is there any reason why you could not vent a TD5 to atmosphere rather then to the intake? other than emissions?

Hello,
I think one of the main reasons is that you will get oil mist coming out and also a entry in to the engine as in dust going in, a catch can with a breather is what most people use.

Simply, If "stuff" can breathe out, "stuff" can breathe in...
You'll end up with oil everywhere, and as the engine cools all sorts of nasties can get in...
Including shock cooling on water crossings etc...
Search for Provent... And go from there

how long do the filters last in them?
if i did i was going to fit Volvo style hyd/Eng breather's to stop the getting back in, if i started going off road seriously i would look at the provent but for everyday use if it dident need a vacume or negative pressure in the sump then a breather to atmosphear with a filter will be more then enough.
