Hi all, am thinking of moving to Oberon from Maitland and am wondering if any aulro members are from Oberon/Bathurst and what they think of the area? Cheers.

G'day Snail Bait,

A mate of mine has a farm on the Abercrombie Road about 30-40 mins from Oberon. I've been up to visit him a few times and it's a stunning part of the world. Yes, it gets properly cold in the winter but the scenery makes it worth it. There's good fishing for trout in the streams and rivers up there and there's plenty of 4WDing and camping to be had out that way too, if that's your cup of tea.

With Bathurst nearby you won't be short of all of life's necessities and a trip to Sydney takes about 2.5 to 3 hours depending on traffic.

My mate has a remarkable Series 3 and has been on this site from time to time - I'll see if I can find out his username for you.

Lovely little town and the surounds are stunning, bloody cold in winter and can get hot in summer but nowhere as hot as Maitland, it has a short summer.

It's close to Bathurst, Lithgow, Blue Mountains, Goulburn, Jenolan caves are just up the road, the coxs river, Abercrombie river and National Park, we love going to the area.

Along with Blayney, in winter Oberon would have to be in contention for the title of coldest place on earth! Those winds in winter can be beyond biting :):)

Some nice countryside around the area.
Don't know what employment opportunities are like though, it is a bit of a "one industry" town (timber).

(I grew up in Bathurst/Orange/Lithgow area).

Cheers,

Living in Orange we used to joke that if you went too far east of Oberon that you would fall off the end of the world........
Small town suported largely by the pine forest industry, as said above Bathurst would be your main retail centre. The weather is cold up there, its probably colder than Blayney and the surrounding country gets pretty high so snow is usually closer and stays longer than in Blayney.
Lovely scenery and reasonably accessable from Sydney.

Regards,

Tote

There was a cop in Bathurst who used to post on this forum. Haven't seen him around for quite some time, though. His name was/(is) ACE and I think he had a Disco.

Others have told you about the weather and scenery. Not a lot more can be added.

Oh yeah - there used to be a freezing works in Oberon, too. It picked up the workers who didn't work in the mill...

Let us know what you think. I think the Tablelands are great part of the world with 4 distinct seasons.( Of course I do because I live here). Low humidity makes it all bearable. Let me say the coldest I have ever been (indoors) is in Sydney in wintertime in a draughty house with just a little blow heater. BBBRRR

I grew up in the Blue Mountains and dad was in a band that played religiously at The Royal in Oberon, we also went on fishing trips around the area so I have been there quite a few times. As others have said it is an amazingly scenic place but gets exceptionally cold, just like Orange.

Basically +1 to what Chris said.

ACE - was a school teacher, now a cop. Not sure if he's still in Bathurst, thought he went further south.

Hmm, you obviously have excellent eyesight if you can see that far......
It's approximately 300 Kilometres from Oberon to Moruya Heads.
Regards, Mike.

Thanks for that Mike, as I travel through the area a fair bit on my way to a mate's place at Mudgee, I would never have guessed that it was 300Ks.
Also I have worked, travelled and prospected around Oberon over the last 40+ years, I have always found the local weather to be disagreeable, either too hot or too cold, not like the paradise of Moruya Heads, drop down sometime and I'll show you round the best bit of Australia, Bendethra, the beaches and the Mountains, Regards Frank.
