Pulled the plastic bash plate off my Falcon this week and have discovered it has a couple of reasonably serious gouges in it, so I'm looking at making a replacement from steel or aluminium, but the question is, how thick?

Casting my mind back to my days pushing falcon vans around western NSW I had to weld some 20mm angle to the bottom of the factory sump guard to combat the guard being pushed up, flattening the sump against the pickup and springing back down. I'd be looking at 5mm Aluminium but I'm sure there are people on here with rallying experience who have a better idea.
