Was anyone else at Sandown that day in 1978?
My old man took me when I was a lad. I have always vividly remembered the Mercedes W196 engine note and incredible noise. Just a beautiful sound, echoing in the wedge of the grandstand. I was intrigued by the event and googled it to find I would have been just five years old. Such an indelible memory of the car, but I hadn't remembered that it was Fangio.
Now I am chuffed to think I can say I have seen him in a race.

Isn't it one of the most beautiful cars of its time? And after selling for 29.5 million  one of the most valuable.

Don't recall if we were at that meeting. We got dragged to a lot of historic racing when we were kids and I have a dim recollection that there was a supporting event my Dad drove in. I do remember the hype about Fangio driving - I would have been 11 or 12 at the time.

Saw Fangio doing demonstration runs in a W196 at Adelaide in '91.
The smell from the brew used was in that car intoxicating, (and Fangio stuck it into the wall too! ouch!) but the shriek from the straight 8 Alfa GP car (pre-war??) that was running around at the same time was spine tingling......

When I was a kid, driving quickly was called "going for a fang".

I hope my kids have happier memories of going to my race meetings than that.

My parents were heavily involved in the Vintage Sports Car Club of Victoria. Dad was president for a number of years, and edited the newsletter for a long time. I went on navigational trials and events when I was a baby. When I was old enough I navigated for dad on trails, bounced for him in mud trails, helped in the garage. Our family life revolved around old cars and when other kids were doing "normal" things we were traipsing around Victoria on rally's, going to race meetings and hill climbs.
So what makes you think that I because I can't recall one specific weekend when I was 11 out of the first 25 years of my life spent around old cars that I mustn't have any happy memories?

I'm familiar with 'Fanging it'
When it all goes wrong it the other F word though.
We learnt about Fangio in primary school. (I consider him to be the Ayrten Senna of an earlier generation).
