For the past few weeks my speedo has been playing up -it would be normal then jump around erratically and now makes a constant ticking noise-I assume the end that slots into back of speedo has rounded off and no longer engages the drive. Looks like a two piece type that connects in engine bay near bulkhead so i guess i can just replace that piece rather than buy a whole cable.

From the sounds that is right - but make sure it is properly engaged at the back of the speedo and also at the join. Also note that last new lower cable I got, the socket for the top inner bit to plug into was made of plastic - and was split when I got it - made a new bit out of steel.

The perenties should have a 1 piece cable. If it doesn't I would recommend you get one as they are a lot less trouble than the 2 piece ones fitted to countys. Get back to me if you want the part number.

I think they used a 2 piece for the wiring to go to dash mounted odometer.

got it sorted now as wasn't engaging properly at rear of speedo because the cable had a cable tie around it where it joins in engine bay-once removed i could push the cable thru firewall enough to engage properly- good to know if i'm over the speed limit now!

I think i spoke too soon -thought it was all okay but now speedo has stopped completely and no ticking noise- I've removed the top cable section that attaches to the rear of speedo thinking that might be the problem but seems to be okay as can spin by hand so cable inside isn't broken. The square drive shaft on the end looks okay- I'm wondering if it's possible that the female drive in rear of speedo could wear out but I assume it would be more likely the cable end would wear out first as it's only plastic. Bit of a pain having no speedo- hopefully i don't have to replace the speedo unit as they're expensive.
