I have a MY2010 110 cab chasis which I bought new in January 2011. After a trip through the Simpson in 2011 I found I had lots of horizontal stipes on the windows in the driver and passenger doors. I figured it was caused by sand/dust caught in the weather strip at the top of the door opening.

Reported it to dealer in 2011 and was told not their problem. Not a warranty issue.

The problem gets worse every time we go bush and get the truck a bit dirty.

Just had it in for final service under warranty and asked for windows to be replaced. Dealer referred it to LRA and the answer came back not a warranty matter.

My question is wht is it not a warranty matter ? Either the glas is too soft or the weather seal is to hard. Either way it is a manufacturing fault as in not suitable for the job intended.

Has anybody else had this problem ?

How to get past the penny pinchers at LRA ?

I have some photos but don't know how to add them !!!

I'm afraid you stand VERY little chance in getting any forward motion on this.

Pilkington has been making glass for many years and all Defenders come standard with their glass. Proving that there is something wrong with their glass will be a losing battle from day one.

In terms of the rubber you unfortunately stand very little chance as well as its not the rubber that's failed, but a particular set of conditions encountered where you took the car. Similarly you would get very little joy out of them if you had premature wear on any mechanical part caused by silica dust or something similar (been there before…).

Their argument would more than likely be that the windows should either be fully up in air conditioned versions or fully down (on the front doors at least) if you want to have them open. Multiple lines as you describe sounds like the windows being half wound?

Good luck if you want to pursue it, but claiming manufacture defect will be a VERY long shot...

Yep, I've got one of those on the drivers window. Created under similar circumstances. Since then I'm careful to drive either windows fully up or down, rather than anything in between.

So here is some more food for thought.

Do you know of any other makes which experience this problem ? I certainly have not experienced it on my Disco 2 or previous 1984 RRC.

I spoke today to a fellow at NSW Dept of Consumer Affairs who felt it could be considered as " not fit for purpose ". Should not have to drive with windows up to stop scratching !. And 4WDs are meant to go on dusty roads....etc.

Fortunately this problem was reported in the first year so it is unlikely to be considered normal wear and tear.

So the advice was to write to LRA and if they are not forthcoming to lodge a complaint with Consumer Affairs.

Let's see what happens.
