Hi all

If I was to purchase an ex army incomplete 110 for a donor engine etc. to convert my v8 county, what year would be best? 87, 88, 89, 90?

Thanks in advance

doubt the year matters so much as the other bits on it

Don't some of them have disk braked rears etc I'd be looking for one with those parts as well

If you buy one with a PTO winch, I'd be interested in taking it off your hands. I don't think the year matters too much, but I believe there were improvements to the engine through the years (something about pistons?) - so '89 or '90.

Sacrificing an RFSV (disk braked perentie) will earn you some disdainful looks from the REMLR crowd.

I would be checking the motor reg rules for your state. In Vic they wouldn't allow an older motor in a transplant. Pretty safe with the County, as most of the Perenties came later.
You will certainly know the difference, especially power..:(

After 87/88 nearly all the 4bd1 were made with the alfin pistons and heavier conrods a la turbo motors and had all the oil feed and returns drilled in the block, just blanked off with plates. I don't think they had the oil squirters under the pistons though.

As mentioned, Alfin pistons from 88 onwards, changed camshaft, considered to be "quieter" - I know some NA blocks had turbo style oil returns pre-drilled and covered with a plate, but was under the impression it was application rather than year specific.

That said, in not sure that buying a post 88 ex-mil landy will mean you'll get a post 88 engine in it (was under the impression they were purchased in bulk by defence -someone with more knowledge may correct me on this).

Is there a reliable way to determine build year from the engine number?
