Any tips for servicing my new to me 06 tdv6
Disco? Oil air fuel filter. Do they self bleed like my old tdi?
I believe the oil filter is a cartridge type on top of the motor?
Does the plastic engine cover just pull off? Any thing else?
Thanks

Remove the oil filler cap first and then the plastic engine cover just pulls off... just don't forget to put the oil filler cap back on !!!!

The oil filter has to go in a very particular way - it can go in the wrong the way and may result in oil starvation and kill the engine.
If you are going to work on your own car get a service manual.

There are 2 or 3 different type of fuel filter..make sure you get the right one.
Oil filter can be difficult to get out of the housing, you could easily break the edge of the filter housing if you try to wedge it out with a screwdriver, you will see what I mean when you do it.Also watch the small fuel lines or whatever they are when you take the filter housing off as they sit on the housing in a groove.
The dip stick is a shocker for getting a correct measurement, read the manual think its 5.5 ltrs oil
AFAIK they dont self bleed, but I always just fill my filter with fuel then put it on.
Diff oil is done by measuring the amount, check, but think its 0.61ltr front & 1.1ltr rear... you dont need much more on the front and it will overflow anyway.
Very easy to service, you cant top the oil filter with oil as it sits upside down, so watch out for the o-ring sealing correctly, you have to look into the valley

Hi Guys,
Same engine.
What are peoples' thoughts on oil and filter change interval?
Full service at 12k and do oil and filters at 6k?
Cheers Gilly

Where's the fuel filter?
Next to the main chassis rail - right below the drivers seat

Old style jap engines for sure - on the TDV6 not needed - 12k is what it should be - for normal use.

As Already mentioned, there are two types of fuel filters, drop the plastic under cover where the auto trans is situated, yours is prolly still the early one so its in the forward position and is relatively easy to get, the later one, a short filter is closer to the fuel tank, dont use any tool to flex the plastic filter housing or you will damage it. pushing the housing by hand will allow the filter to come free.
IMHO, I dont recommend filling the fuel filter before installing it as there is the potential for any dirt ingress to bypass the filter, put in dry and bleed. Most common rail diesels dont have a bleed mode (unlike a TD5). Do as most manufacturers list, ignition on for 10 - 30 seconds, ignition off for 10 sec, repeat aprox 6 times or as many times as you feel it needs, if this is done most common rail diesels will purge the air back to the tank quite quickly.
The oil cartridge (in the centre of the engine just at a stretch) like most engines has a plastic screw top housing, use a 6 point socket to remove and refit so as not to damage the plastic nut top. Replace the orings (with the oil cartridge) and dont over tighten the top.
It goes without saying to dispose of old oil n old filters in an environmently friendly manner.
I do all filters on customers vehicles at that 10 or 12k service.

Hi Ade,
You are meant to back the oil filter casing off a couple of turns to allow the oil to drain before you screw the casing off completely. I find grabbing the little connection on the filter in a vice and giving a sharp tug get the filter out. always put the filter into the engine before you screw the outer casing on that way you get the filter position right.
Transmission oil change depending on klms, get a metal pan kit from A & B Transmissions in Dandenong, comes with full instructions, also use the Lifeguard 6 oil don't use anything else.
The fuel filter is self priming, after you have fitted the filter turn the ignition on three or four times without starting the engine, wait for the pump to stop before you turn the ignition off. Always worked for me.
Servicing all the usual rules apply, coolant I always used the LR coolant saves mixing and all the risks associated with that.
