Gday All,
After paying for something we have hardly been using lately we decided to cancel our foxtel today, and WOW did they start throwing some amazing deals to make us stay. In the end the supposed manager rang and after his speil I said why didnt you offer such big discounts before, it would have been a lot easier. Some of the deals for the same package were less than half of our current deal.
Anyway in the end he conceded that he couldn't keep us and gave up, but , if I ever sign up again I will have a different attitude in regards to what they offer.
Cheers Ean

They'll ring back later, and try to con the missus into re-signing while you're out.
All the extra perks run out after 3 months, and you're back where you started from.
Been there, done that.

The missus was the one who decided to cancel it so not much chance of that.
I said to the manager "give me your best offer " 12 months at half our current rate.. he didn't know what to say when I said. "not good enough "

Why would you pay to have TV with ads anyway?

You would never like living in the uk where you have to pay a license to use your TV for the terrestrial channels . About $200 to $250 a year

If you need to, put some of that money aside to increase your Internet speed and downloads. If you already have good speed and downloads, money in the bank [thumbsupbig]

too many advertisements on pay tV anyway, cancelled ours few years ago, only miss the history channelI love the Hitler channel, but mainly because some of the shows aren't about Hitler.
Probably the only thing I'd miss is my Daily Show with Jon Stewart and my regular top up of Yes Minister/Yes Prime Minister. Waiting for a repeat of the Python shows but they come around very rarely.

I bought them on DVD. Cheaper than Foxtel. Better programming times too.

How do you cancel the free to air channels? they are all full of garbage. I wonder at the mentality of viewers who look at the garbage. American rubbish that they probably can't air over there.:o:o:)

Can't give the Yanks full credit. There's enough home grown trash on air to compete with it.

the gun laws are there so we dont shoot our tv s and therefore not watch the ads. must say going without the sport channels could cause domestic disharmony though

I would never have the time to watch enough TV to get value out of pay tv. My dad had it when it first came out, watched it a few times, liked that discovery channel.
Avid DVD watcher when I get time. It comes on when I want and if I fall asleep it restarts again. If I see a series I like on TV, I get SHMBO to buy it on ebay and when I'm finished she sells it.
Don't mind some of the of the yank action stuff, but by the time it comes on after reno, cooking, fat busting or other crap I'm asleep. If I was retired I might go for pay tv, so 20 years to go.

Any business that tries to offer you a discount as you are on the way out the door was ripping you off beforehand

We had Austar, bloody pain in the arse, so we cancelled, the whole reason for pay TV was the Motorcycle racing, which was covered by Speed TV, which Austar were not going to get, they were down right rude when we cancelled, telling us we had to have the box back to them by a certain time.
As we packed it up to send off, Foxtel took them over fully, the phone calls asking why and would we consider re-signing, they even said not to worry about sending the box back, and apologized about Austar, apparently they were getting a lot of complaints about them.
Don't miss it really, maybe the History channel, Nat Geo, Planet Earth, World Superbikes.
Now instead of 60 channels of crap, it's only 10;)

In that case, that is further evidence that banks are ripping us off. I have two examples of banks suddenly being able to offer a better deal when they were trying to avoid losing a customer.
Back when I was paying about 18% on my bank home loan, I was really struggling and was living from hand to mouth. On several occasions I was a few dollars overdrawn and was hit with outrageous fees. When I rang the bank to tell them I had transferred my home loan to my credit union, they asked why I was leaving them. When I said it was because of the penalty fees they kept imposing they said that they could probably come to some arrangement about those fees. So why did they need to impose them in the first place?
I met someone who was really struggling with quite high interest rates on some sort of business loan. After a few years during which time his wife and he used to pack shelves at night in the local supermarket to keep their heads above water, he found a way of transferring the loan to a local building society with a much lower interest rate.
When he told the bank, they asked what interest rate he would be paying the building society, so he told them the new rate. The bank's response was, "We could match that."

I have a small amount on term deposit with our bank. When it is time to renew they ring me and offer a higher interest rate than the one they advertise. I could renew on line myself but at the reduced rate. Jim

i hear you - we took out loans with westpac when we had our business, made sense at the time to have commercial loans for house as well, business went to the crapper couple years ago, we devise an exit strategy, i get a good paying job and we go to the bank to restructure loans. They say thank you for coming to us, as you are now considered a risk we are withdrawing our discount rate offer, we have no interest in restructuring your loans but are happy to leave the current facilities with you..
HERES THE THING!! - we are paying 2.25 to 2.75% above market rates, have been for 2 years now, never missed a payment but cannot refinance because our LVR is outside the 80% and 70% by about 40,000$. we can't save the difference because the WESTPAC bank is happy to take an additional $30,000 per annum in interest from us.
I hate WESTPAC more than the adds in PayTV lol...

I saw this sign at Port Augusta in 2012, I thought it was free or it was pay, not both.
