LAND ROVER ONE TEN LANDROVER County 110, 4 door ute, 1986 V8 Bicentenary model, offers up to 4 p.m. Fri. Feb. 29. Ph. 64611350 King Island.
So what' special about the bicentenary model.
And what happened in 1786 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1786) that would warrant a commemorative Land Rover?

It's been a while since they've been mentioned - but in essence the eight (I think it was only eight sets) were built either in 86 or shortly after modified using 1986 chassis. They are a custom set up made by taking the top off the rear of a county and installing a fifth wheel hitch for the bicentennial display caravan

a number of sawn-off station wagons were made to tow special trailers (on a 5th wheel) for events associated with the Australian Bicentennial 1988. This one was spotted near Bright (Vic) in 1995. (http://www.csse.monash.edu.au/%7Elloyd/tildeLand-Rover/110/)
Almost looks like a 110 ute.
Cute.

Such a problem with Wiki - they think everything is US based - the Bi-Centenary was referring to the Bi-Centenary of the Colonisation of Australia by the Brits (yes because they had lost the Americas).
There were a number of touring exhibitions with 5th wheel van type trailers. The 110 Counties were modified in Sydney by the removal of the rear cab to allow for the 5th wheel coupling on the floor of the tub.
The van would be parked in the regional town and the vehicle used for exhibition staff transport during the stay. There is one in Sydney owned by a member of the LROCS.

Not that it shows whats special about the vehicle.

Oh, that bicentenary. You'd have thought that after having spent the last four years on the First Fleet I would have immediately thought of 1788.
The Wiki did mention the launch of the First Fleet in 1786, although I was pretty sure that the First Fleet launched early in 1787, but we all know that Wikipedia is never wrong.

I actually saw one in Dubbo about a week ago. Not sure how many were made, but I thought it was rather more than the number quoted.
As far as I know they were all V8s, but of course it would be fairly easy to fit the Isuzu.

Hmmm, I would be careful about the condition on king island, I have seen a 120 from Flinders island that was very rusty, a real shame as it only has 68,000km on the clock...

Was just thinking that. Never mind the cost of getting it back to the mainland.
I wouldn't have thought that they would tow a fifth wheel trailer very well. Isn't the mounting point meant to be directly over the axle? Not possible by looking at the pics.

Yes but not my design - if you did it today you would use a 130 (or 127) crew cab.

the weight doesnt have to be directly over the rear axle but you can put it up over the rear axle on a 110 depending on the hitch up setup of the trailer you use.
(no points for guessing whose already got his camper conversion planned out)

hi everyone!
Today I joined the defender/county owners club, i swapped my series 3 swb for what i thought was a home-job 110 wagon cut to a ute, turns out its a Bicentenary genuine ute! although someone in the past has cut the original bed off it.. I was just wondering if anyone has any information on them or some original pictures anywhere? from what i have found there were only 20 made in 1986, and mines a 12/1986 model, 3.5 V8 bit rough and worse for wear but considering i found her in a back yard jammed away it seems pretty good!

I'm sure there has been a thread about them on here a few years back, so some more searching should find a picture or two.
My memory says they were all made in one batch and were all V8s.

Mine is the same vintage. Except it has been modified a bit. 4BD1T, Lt95A, gal mil chassis, pto winch, lockers,HD front diff. and roof extended to cover rear section.
About 28 made I believe, most were white afaik. The frame on the chassis was for the turntable to tow the 5th wheeler vans that folded out into the displays.

The Bicentenial 110 were used in the run up to the 1988 Bi-Centennial as information project around the country. Some used to tow a 5th wheeler educational caravan. Some were cut down in the cab but left the tub. I've not seen one cut down as far as your's but perhaps it was original. You certainly can see the mouting for the 5th wheel coupling.

I don't think it is original - the wear pattern on the lower back of the cab is consistent with there being a conventional tub there, rather than some sort of flatbed - and it must have had some sort of structure to carry mudguards, lights etc.
Also, if original, I would have expected it to be finished with the galvanised corner as is fitted on cab/chassis vehicles of the same date.

I reckon it is original John. My guess is someone has cut the rear well body off just behind the cab probably to fit a trayback. Also looks like it was originally white like all the ones I have seen and has been repainted blue. The chassis bracket for the turntable and the holes on the rear of the cab on the drivers side where the roll bar/spare tyre carrier was attached are identical to the ones on mine. The build date is the same as mine 12/86. I would be interested to see the VIN as it should be close to mine if it is an original. Should be close to SALLDHMV7BA2#####

I reckon it is original John. .......
I think we are at cross purposes - my post was saying that the lack of a rear tub was not original, not that it was not an original bicentenary model - I think the frame for the fifth wheel says that, without any doubt. I agree with you that it is almost certainly one. Not sure about the colour though, but this should be easy to ascertain by looking at the colour on the interior panels that are normally covered by trim. While, like you, most of the ones I have seen have been white, that does not mean they all were.
Like you I would be interested in the VIN relative to others, because I am pretty sure they were all one order, so should be pretty close numbers, although not necessarily consecutive.

The vin on my one up to that point is identical! it definitely originally had a tub on it that someone cut off, there was a mangled alloy tray on it but the guy i got it off wanted the tray so he kept it. I am definitely going to take it back as close to original, i have a series 2a that i had for parts i am considering finding out the differences between the bed on it and the original defender one and cutting it to length and tig welding it on.
Bearman does yours have alot more electronics than would be in a normal county of that age? like cruise control electric fan controls and other things like that
And sorry about my earlier post with the question! i didn't realize i wasn't allowed to ask it!

G'day Luke,
I would say you have the real item. Send me a PM if you wish and let me know your VIN number and I can tell you how close it is to mine. I reckon it will be very close. The 2A tub will fit onto it but there is a difference in the shape of the guard arch and the 110 flare will not fit in unless you do a bit of "modifying"
Only extra wiring mine had was for CB radio when I purchased it. Apart from the shortened cab the only other difference from a normal County wagon is the rear seat is moved a little further forward than standard and a 60l auxiliary fuel tank on the drivers side.

IMHO your task would be easier if you acquired a standard 110 tub and transferred the bulkhead behind the rear seat,

I have just acquired one of these and am in the process of fixing some faults ahead of a blue slip (Sydney sider). The first time i took it down for a blue slip there was much confusion with the inspector as the Australian Motor Vehicle Certification Board has no listing for the type in their NVD1 section. The inspector was unsure whether to classify the vehicle as either a Ute or Omnibus as the other 4 door land rovers of the type are classified. I would be very interested to see how other members have their's registered and if there is any further information on this vehicle that I can acquire.
Mine has the additional fuel tank on the drivers side, a detroit locker rear end, 3.5 litre V8 and is now dual fuel.
