Hi all,

Wanting to fit a rooftop tent and would like to hear from anyone who has any feed back both good / bad on the Hanibal. Only need a two man. Always seem to be away at work during the 4x4 camping shows so hard to do direct comparisons. If anybody has good experience with a similar quality brand that would be muchly appreciated also.

I have their 2m tent. It's a beauty with twin doors, twin ladders. You won't be disappointed going the Hannibal. They are a great company to deal with. I know there are cheaper options out there, but the quality of the Hannibal is very very good.

My only gripe is that my twin ladders don't fit within the tent when folded up. They're supposed to, I think I have too much bedding left in tent. The tent has stood up to some heavy winds and rain with no problem.

Your big decision is jumbo fly or not. I don't have jumbo fly and when raining I wish I did, however the 360 degree views and breeze all other times is wonderful.

Kenley.

Apart from being really expensive I know nothing about Hannibal, I have seen these in person though, on a members Def 130, very good quality and Aussie made, yes they are not cheap either, but they are made here.

Hi Kenley,
Thanks for that, can you not add the jumbo fly on after or is it something that needs to be bought / built into the tent. Leaning more and more towards the Hanibal just wanted to see if there were any compelling reasons not to. Also are you happy with the mattress provided or did you modify?
Cheers Cam

I have an aussie traveller 'deluxe' which is similar to mr swagman..........the aussie traveller mini is your conventional RRT, I have not seen one but would imaging it would be a high quality product...Australian made

Thanks Kelvin,
It's really useful to get these links ( going to have a look at both this one and Mr Swagman 's) as these are brands I'm not familiar with. Cheers

The Aussie Traveller is a good quality tent also.

Regarding your earlier question - from all I've seen there is certainly no compelling reason NOT to buy a Hannibal. I've yet to meet an unhappy owner.

We have a Hannibal 1.4 on our D3 fitted to a Frontrunner roofrack and it's streets ahead of the others... we got a "show price" from Guests 4WD (great mob to deal with)... and have been very happy with it... You get what you pay for and remember "The memory of Bad quality lasts longer than the shock of high prices"
Having said that I'm sure some of the "lighter" versions would give you good service under normal conditions however when it's wet and cold and the wind is picking up you'll be glad you spent the extra few dollars and bought a Hannibal... IMHO

P.S. I forgot to mention - it is heavy so you may need a couple of Bulgarian weightlifters to help you get it on and off :)... I rigged up a simple pulley system in my garage to make the job quick and easy.

P.P.S. - there is a new optional thicker mattress... we went for that and once again can't fault it. :) plus we got ours with the jumbo fly when we bought it - not sure about adding it later or not ( I've never bothered to check if it's "removable") - I'm sure a quick call to their distributor would clear this up for you.

cheers

Many thanks Old Salt, sound advice. This is a hobby/ passion for me as I plan on spending lotsa time in the car seeing Outback Oz.a Been using an Oz tent RV3 up to now which has been brilliant but for an over night stop the quicker set up time and comfy mattress is very appealing. Dead right with the pulley system, easy fix :)

Well after having the flip over style RTT for 3-4 yrs (ARB Simpson 2), I have gone the James Baroud. It doesn't have the canopy protecting the entrance but after having both, I can live without it. I found if your staying put & want to go for a drive, it's a PITA to pack up all the time. After using the JB for 10 nights in Jan, it's a breeze to set up (20 seconds) and pack up (1-2mins). You can store bedding and pillows easily whilst packed up. It has a silent solar powered fan, fully lined so no condensation dripping from the interior poles, LED rechargeable torch and a storage net attached to the roof for clothes. An 8cm thick mattress helps too. I'm sure the Hannibal mattress would be better than the ARB anyway.

We went to the Melbourne 4x4 show many years ago and thankfully it was raining so we could see all the roof top tents out in the elements..the Hannibal was the only one that was not leaking...that was all we needed to decide on buying one..We have taken it from NZ to Oz twice now, been to Cape York and are currently driving around Oz...although we got the annex when we bought it we have left it at home in NZ and if the weather looks really threatening we will find a b&b or something to stay in...we never used the annex on our first trip.

Service from Peter is great ...couldn't recommend them any higher

Many thanks Dave, Graham & Trish, will check out
Your tent Dave as I hadn't heard of them until now.
Like the idea of a 3 min pack up but no leaks is equally
Appealing. :)

Yes they are good. With the pic of it set up, that was the end of the day when it rained for a solid 8 hours and not a drop inside.
