Not to open a can of worms....
Has anyone had any great experience with Coopers St Maxx on their Defenders? I am looking at putting a set of 235 x 85 x 16 on my 2002 130.

I have checked out the searches with limited sucess with various tyres being bagged out/mixed reviews. I know everyone has different driving styles, experience, just want to hear if anyone has had any recent positive experience. As it doesn't mater what tyre dealer you go to they allways have a better tyre to sell you that just so happens to be in their stop. Sick of the shady tyre dealer, just looking for drivers experience and thoughts on these tyres?

Thanks in advance for any help....

I have run them on my Defender 110 for the last 2 years without issue.
Cant say anything negative to be honest.

I would be asking for negative experiences as well that way you will get a more accurate indication of how good they are.

What sort of mileage are you getting.
I have Maxis on my Disco and they are about worn out at 70,000.

Thanks Djam1, that is great to hear as considering them between the Coppers St maxx and the BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO.

I found plenty of negatives on here on most brands just trying to find if anyones actually happy with their tyre choice? As there is a $60 difference between the both of them. :-)

Hi Ade,
As nismine01 said, what sort of km's are you getting out of them? Have they suffered the dreaded chipping I have been hearing about?

Thanks mate :-)

The youngest heir has them on his Hilux and seems quite happy with them. Mind you, its only a Hilux, so anything would be an improvement over standard! :D

I had a set of ST-MAXX tyres on my GQ Nissan for about 15,000 km prior to selling the vehicle.

For an aggressive pattern (for A/T) I found them to be very quiet on road, with very good road-holding performance. There were no "holy crap" moments around roundabouts in the rain. My only off-road experience with them was general gravel road driving and very "soft-core" weekenders through the sunshine coast hinterland. I didn't have any problems with them, but it was only a limited exposure prior to sale.

I had a set of 285/75R16 BF Goodrich A/T's on the 80-series cruiser I used to own. I loved those things. I did many many highway km, plus several forays into western Qld, including Birdsville, and visits to Landcruiser Mountain Park for some play (didn't do the "extreme" level tracks though).

These tyres had about 80,000 km of use and reasonable tread left (useable and still legal) when I sold the vehicle. The only puncture I had was in the main street of Mackay when I ran over a dirty great coach screw.

Those tyres were new in 2004. I've heard others claim the compound is different now and the BF A/T's aren't as tough, but I cannot confirm that.

Good luck with your choice. I personally liked both varieties.

For what it's worth, I'm going to run Hankook Dynapro M/T RT03's on my new Defer, simply because I plan on spending the first couple of years doing weekenders into the mountains around Canberra, and I got a fantastic deal on a set locally.

Cheers

Been running a set for 2 years, can't fault them on or off road. Had them down to 10psi on sand with no issues. I wouldn't hesitate to use them again.

I have had Cooper ST MAXX on my 1998 130 for the past 18 mths, and have done just on 40,000 km.
Very pleased with them, stacks of tread on them, however I am running 6 of them on a every 10,000 km rotation, so they should look good.

I have a camper built permanently on the back of my truck cab 130 so the weight is always about 3200 kg running up to 3500/3600 kg on a trip.

Been across various types of roads. One trip from SE Qld to SW Qld, Western NSW, Victoria and back.
The other major trip to Mt Isa and Sandover Hwy, Eastern McDonalds, Western McDonalds, south through Finke and part Oodnadatta Track ( Highway ). Then picked our way through some gravel / sandy roads to then drive round Eyre Peninsula and back to SE Qld

With low pressures they crawled their way over the boulders to Palm Valley in NT and Ruby Gap NT. And were okay in the sand that we travelled on. Not dune work...yet to try that.

No noticeable chipping of the tread. Not an expert but I think the earlier ST was prone to chipping.

So that's my experience with ST MAXX if its any help.

Resurrecting an old thread rather than starting a new one.

I need to add a few comments about my experience with Cooper St Maxx tyres.

I bought six when they first came out, first one failed at around 30000k and two more since....last one today, about 40000k. All three have split near the sidewall and tread and the three still on Rover will fail the same way. When the first one failed I replaced it with a new Cooper, but that will be the last. I can't complain about wear, grip or tread chipping/cutting, but I am very peeed off with the failures. At current Pilbara prices these three are $1320.00.

I think I will refit my split rims with 14ply MRF rags. At $120.00 each who cares if they fail and I have not had a single flat when off track either....just need ear plugs when I get up to around 80kph.

the next one to fail

and a split around the bead on all of them, but not causing a problem
