Re: TDI era rear door and lock.

Today I received a new fuel cap with key. What are the odds - the key for the new fuel filter cap locks/unlocks my rear door!?

The lock/barrel on the rear door is virtually new having been replaced not that long ago. How many different key codes are there for the rear door lock .... 1 !? :o

Maybe the same as the old '60's and 70's holdens and falcons. They had like 28 key combinations each!! :o So the chances of your falcon wagons key fitting the XW GT down the road was pretty high! My old man used to be able to unlock his mates xy ute with his xw sedans key :D
The problem with pin and tumbler locks is the more combos the finer and more complicated the keys have to be which then leads to high failure rates in 1s that are used a lot, eg vehicles and also harder to insert and remove, not what most car owners want! not to mention costs, the bane of all manufactures!

My first car back in the late 80's was a little mazda 808. It gave my mates great delight to play tricks on me by opening the car with their house keys and leaving me various surprises :)

Thankfully, the ignition seemed to only operate with the proper ignition key.

I used to start my HQ with a paddle pop stick - sure that was a lot about wear, but it tells you something about the sophistication (or otherwise) of the lock mechanism.
