I cannot get it, we have here and for sure in many countries of the world manufacturers that have invested millions of dollars in R&D, capital equipment, etc and employ thousands of people and are earning little money (in relation to investment)operating in a lost or simple close down.
On the other hand we have WhatsApp (http://www.smh.com.au/digital-life/digital-life-news/strawberries-seal-facebook-whatsapp-21-billion-love-affair-20140220-3331g.html), a IT company that is 5 years old, employ 50 people and is been sold for 21 billion A$
I wonder how many investors in big manufacture companies are now given a second thought about were to put their dough.......

Not many manufacturing companies that have instant access to over 450 million active clients at the press of a few buttons

It's all make believe, electronic 1s and 0s. Nothing that you can hold in your hand and say someone made this, it's real and it's great. I get what the value is for the owners, but who is spending money on these sites/apps whatever? I guess it's all advertising based?

come on Bob, if I said I made an app that replaces your bathroom scales would you buy it. All you do is give me $1.99 and stand on your phone.
Surely it's not my fault if they break their phone, or that people are so stupid. There are plenty of apps out there that don't do much, but people buy anyway. As for the bathroom scale manufacturer, who cares. Who buys that crap anymore, and besides it's not even electrical and you can't hold it in your hand.

funny old world….. think it's only going to get funnier. God help us.

I remember a report back in the 70's which said that the group ABBA earned more money than Volvo :o
Make you wonder which it is the best way to earn money, manufacturing, jump and scream in the stage or just develop an stupid apps.
Apps looks like that it is the winner but for generating employment and distribution of wealth it sucks. :(

Now now boys, I have been a devout atheist for my who life. I'm starting to wonder though, as humans we all do a lot better with boundaries. From day one children do better with boundaries, and society is fracturing a fair bit because the lack of boundaries. An atheist has no boundaries, just what they feel fits. So because I'm struggling to make since out of the world, it's got me thinking the boundary, or decipline of believing in something higher may have some weight. Doesn't matter if it's real in the end or not, it's the boundaries while one is alive.

It's just a thought at the moment. But its something no one can take from me, just all within me, and would help making peace within all the crazyness.

Have I lost it? Maybe I'm out of wack.

You are entirely correct . Humans need boundaries, children need boundaries. Even if you have no religion, if you stick close to these thoughts, it would not be a bad way to live your life.

The 10 Commandments List, Short Form

You shall have no other gods before Me.
You shall not make idols.
You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain.
Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.
Honor your father and your mother.
You shall not murder.
You shall not commit adultery.
You shall not steal.
You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
You shall not covet.

Edit, I guess for some on here , verses 1 to 4, you could replace the words " gods, idols, LORD, & Sabbath, with LAND ROVER for the first three, & going off road for no. 4.

There are a lot of things that make up the 'value' of a company. There is the regular multiplier of gross profit, there are also strategic acquisitions, and denying a competitor their strategic acquisitions, or silencing a disruptive technology.. but the most expensive is a strategic acquisition to stop anything that could erode the income stream and vision that maintains your market capitalisation (share price).

This is what WhatsApp was.

My favourite used to be Red Mill.
Used to carry it in the tucker box, under the seat and in the glove box.
Do they still make it ?

Apps looks like that it is the winner but for generating employment and distribution of wealth it sucks. :(

Umm, Chukka, who said employment has to be generated or wealth distributed?
Those with enough smarts to develop apps are employed, those smart enough to outsmart the rest of us and entice us to buy the apps deserve the wealth.
It's kind of an unwritten law of the ages, the spoils go to those who endeavour.

BTW, this is exactly the deal with ABBA. Volvo appealed to a few hat wearers, who bought one. ABBA appealed to an entire generation
who bought records and cassettes.

Here is one of my faves:

Abba - Dancing Queen - YouTube

Cheers
