Is there anybody out there...
Situation:
TD5 Defender 2003 does not start instantly like it used to, but when it does there is a small cloud of black smoke that smells like diesel.
If I rev the engine it runs rough and billows clouds of blue/white smoke.
I have found over a period that if I start the engine and leave it idle until warmed up it doesn't blow smoke.
Engine does not blow smoke when hot and doesn't use oil. It does use water, about 1.5 cm from the reservoir every 3 weeks or so. The problem has been ongoing for a couple of years now.
Vehicle has overdrive unit, LPG, larger inter-cooler etc.
With the 'disappearing'water issue, my mechanic did a head job a year ago... still loosing water though... When head came off, No.1 piston and chamber were shiny bright, no carboning at all!!!
Turbo has just been replaced but no difference to the smoke and now the engine has no power. I tried moving the waste gate actuator rod last night but it won't budge!
Also, I read on another forum that the inter-cooler could be clogged with oil.
This TD5 is absolutely superb on the road, wider track, lifted, power, steering, stainless exhaust, all very well modified... just a frustrating/ed engine
Any suggestions would be a help please
Cheers
Brian
